Time for a Quality Gun: Advice needed

I have played with rifles for decades and have only been shooting ( at the hobby level ) long distances the last ten years. I've gone through the typical savage, rem and weatherby rifles and am thinking now may be time to invest in a high end piece of steel.

Options I've researched
1) Cooper
2) Mcmillan
3) A full custom
etc..


I am very experienced and set up well for reloading but as far as other aspects of tinkering with the rifle not so much. A Mcmillan with good optics prices out to near the $10K mark. From your expert opinions can a rifle of similar quality be purchased or custom built for less ?

Retirement is coming and I'd love to have a gun that I can shoot 1/2 MOA all day long at the range and take it on a hunting trip now and then. I'd like it in a magnum round like a 7mm RM class and not a .308 . As for whether or not I can shoot that well all day is another issue:)

I think you'd be better off with a full custom. It's going to be built to your exact specifications and you won't have to compromise on anything. A nice full custom build can be had for $5000. Put a Nightforce on top and you're at $7000. Quite a bit less than $10000.
Just my simple advice so take it for what it's worth.

P.S. If you have a custom built by someone here, you will get an equally nice rifle and support local business. It may or may not matter to you, but it definitely influences my purchases.

Not much we can't do with that budget.

Lots of options and can meet whatever your priorities are. BUT put down what is important to you on paper first. The more specific you can be with performance goals and parts you like, the better the end result can be.

A main problem we find with custom rifles is shooters focus on the parts and loose sight of how those parts work together. That can lead to an expensive smogasboard of really nice stuff that is horrid as a unit.

My suggestion is to buy good used custom benchrest rifle. You can remove the stock and replace it to your favourite stock. The benchrest rifle will "usually" shoot under 1/2 MOA all day for a reasonable price.
