well I've gone and put the cart infront of the horse again and bought a Leupold VXII 6-18x40 A/O with the LRV reticle. Now I need a rifle to put it on. Here's the debate....I'm undecided in cartridge...either 223 WSSM, 22-250 or the time honored 220 Swift. Obviously the cartridge will determine rifle. So here's the options: Browning Varmint Stalker in 223 WSSM, Tikka T3 Varminter in 22-250 or Remington VS SF II in 220 Swift.....hmmm very hard decision. The Browning's barrel will outlast the others with the chrome linning and will be the fastest...but your stuck with the WSSM's with that action although it does toss a 60 grain + pill for bigger game. The Tikka is well...not all that ###y with the glued on accessories. then the Remington ....well 220 Swift sure isn't a slouch but well...hows the accuracy?

What would you do.....but to be clear $$$$ are not a consideration here.:runaway: :runaway: :runaway:

I would choose the t-3 myself. As much as I like 700 actions,I have yet to see a t-3 that wasn't very accurate. As well the 22-250 is an excellent cartridge for the application.

22-250

The 22-250 is the varmint king as far as I am concerned. It is fast and accurate, and is available in more actions and from more manufacturers than any other varmint cartridge (I think!). You would have a hard time splitting the hairs between any of those cartridges out to 400 yards or so, but I guess I just prefer the 22-250.

Good luck with which ever one you chosse!

If $$$ aren't a consideration, then ditch the tikka and look at it's bigger better brother, the Sako. Or, better yet, order a Cooper :D :D

And why not look at a 204 while you're at it. Or a 6mm of some sort for long range and/or bigger critters

It seems that the 223 WSSM never really caught on like the 270 or 300 WSMs did. I'd go with a 22-250, or a 220 Swift if you want something a bit different. If you handload the WSSM wouldn't present a problem, but if you're limited to factory ammo, I don't know how available WSSM ammo will be in a couple of years. Just my 2 cents...

Why not a Kimber 84m Varmint in 22-250? Wonderfull rifle. Think it comes in 204 Ruger too.

Great todbartell, spend over $360 USD on the Leupold VXII and buy an economy rifle for it to sit on.....to boot a Savage ugly sister made from spare parts in the factory...sure they shoot but...they are just sooooooo ugly.

We need equal representaion here guys. Hey, they are not any uglier than a Remington 710:p :D

Varmint Killer

Have owned a great many varmint cartridges and my vote is for the 250. It's a pretty versatile cartridge and when hand loaded can provide some hair splitting accuracy. Go with what feels good in your hands and at the shoulder. Sometimes the prettiest of guns aren't always the best shooters. If you're looking for a varmint shooter you don't need to be grouping shots in dime at 300 and you would quite suprised as the perfomance of those ugly Stevens 200's. they're actually a pretty good shooter for the money....but just an awfully darn shame to put that Loopie on such an ulgy bugger, why not sell the scope and we all wouldn't feel so bad.;) :D ......just my 2 cents worth.....

Well, there's the full-blown Savage line if the Stevens is too nasty. A nice model 12 of some sort, or a 10FP (which only come in 223/308). The new model 12 precision varminter looks GOOD

Caliber wise, I'd go for the .22-250. I have one in a Ruger # 1 with a Bushnell Sportview 6-18 however both the daughter & son in law each have a Savage 112BVSS in .22-250. I was impressed with the out of the box accuracy, so, I had to have one. I've just picked up a the same in .25-06 and topped it with a Leupold VX-III, 6-20 with varmint reticle. I've just started reloading for it and so far, again, I'm impressed.

Maybe put some thought into the 22BR or 22 PPC if you got a little xtra coin to play with. Both approach the 22-250 with less powder.
The Swift which I also play with, are a hoot to play with but are abit restricted as to how hot you run them without hurting the throat.
One of the cons to the swift is the brass is abit harder to find, where as the 22-250 is available almost anywhere.

maybe you should get what you want put together...

you have four calls to make...

first..call one of our excellent dealers here on CGN and procure an SPS in 7-08...have it sent directly to Dennis S....call Ted Gaillard and have him send one of his excellent 22 cal barrels in a Rem Varmint contour to Dennis....then call B&C and order a stock with the aluminium bedding block...

and then call Dennis just to let him know what's going on...:D..and tell him what chamber you want.

why a 7-08 SPS?...because you'll probably get more for the barrel than any other SPS barrel....:)
