Time to buy my first hunting rifle

Brushy, you did say you wanted it to be nice, how about pretty? The model 70 featherweight was named "rifle of the year" at the 1995 SHOT show. It was once touted as being the world's most beautiful rifle by public opinion. I have to agree that it is a beauty, coupled with your choice of .270 win, I think it will be a long lasting love affair. If you hunt around, fast you might still find a new one around.
And as a footnote: your original choice of the .270 win is "awesome" - stick with it, I had figured that all kinds of caliber choices were going to be thrown at you. You picked well (and I don't own a .270 win) either, I have a 270 wizzzm

Yeah .270 is my all time favorite caliber... you can even get a .270WSM if you want to keep the rifle short and light!
You mention that you are of small stature which does not neccesarily dictate a short LOP. Have you fired a lot of rifles/shotguns? How are you affected by recoil? Can we get some pictures of you for Riley? He has a very short length of pull!

Never had a close look at 7-08 but enough said .270 is only caliber I like which is not available in milsurplus rifles.

Thanks for all the amazing advice! I tried to get to the local gun shop this weekend while I was in town, but it was closed due to staffing shortages... But should be open again when I'm back next weekend.
I'm also going to the range with a fellow local gunnut to shoot some different calibre rifles to get a feel for it... I'll let you all know how it goes!
Funny: Someone made a reference that I'll make a good wife some day, and someone else said no talking to girls without parents present. How old do you guys think I am???

I stand by my statement, some lucky fellow out there is going to land himself a wife who will hunt and shoot with him and if he REALLY wins the jackpot you will also like fishing .
I have a daughter that is 5'4" tall and 120 pounds, and she has a left handed 30-06 which I handload for her. It is a model 70 Winchester, and I had to have the stock shortened to 12.5" LOP. Added a Pachmayr recoil pad to soften the recoil a bit. Length of pull will be critical for you. You need to get measured by a good smith.
The 270 is a good choice. My daughter has no problem with the '06 but as I said, I handload her rounds, and I make sure that the recoil is manageable. She gets 150 grain TSX's with 46 gr of IMR3031. They work real good on deer, and I am waiting to see how they work on moose. The 270 won't recoil as much as the '06, but close depending on rifle weight and bullet weight.
Choose wisely, and don't rush into it.

my other 1/2 loves shooting and hunting .she has shot fallow deer to elk with her tikka in 7mm-08. her size is a bout a inch taller and same body size .she hurt her back years ago. recoil is a issue with her .her 1st choice is her 7mm08.next 308,6.5x55,358win,30-30,243,250sav,11mm mauser,270win,30-06,300win least liked.i have more that she shoots but these are your more common ly found cartridges
she likes her 7mm08 because she is consistantly accurate , she can carry all day,shoot all day without back pain,and it looks good to her.
7mm08 not as easily found anywhere. i reload 4 her.she is very confident out to over 400yds.
she also likes the safety ,and how it "fits" her smaller hands.
she gets cold easy so she wore her parka when she bought it .
Have fun ! shoot as many as possible prior to buying !

Update on my rifle: I went to the gun store here in PG and they didn't really have a lot of selection for smaller people... But I'm going to the range still, to try some stuff... And I'm going to Vancouver in a week, so I'll try to find places down there to try holding!
