Time to close the Manitoba deer season for at least 2014 and 2015

From all that I'm hearing the winter wasn't nearly as bad as everyone thought it would be. Getting reports out of a lot of places where the deer started coming out of the "deep woods". They don't seem to be in very bad health either. The only place that I have heard that might be hurting so far is the Swan River area.

I have also heard buck only for this year.

I've heard rumors of bucks only as well. If they want accurate deer numbers, they need to do an aerial count, not get their "figures" from people who had a crappy hunt last year, look out their window in Winnipeg and see piles of snow, and are then pushing for a closure based on this reason.
I haven't seen nearly the winter kill this year that I saw last year.

Maybe a solution would be archery only. For EVERYONE. Seems fair to me. Especially since it's usually harder to get one in archery season. Plus it's going back to the roots. No one can argue with that.

Really? No one?

I'll bet all those hunters who are getting on in years and can no longer draw a bow properly could argue with that. So could those of us who still take those guys out and try to help them get in a few more years of hunting when they might be otherwise unable to do so. I'll bet there are even one or two hunters in the province who don't own or shoot bows...imagine that, what slobs they must be! I wonder how they would feel if told they couldn't hunt this year, unless they spend a bundle on new equipment and put in hours of practice to learn to use it.

Unbelievable elitist crap, and exactly the sort of BS that drives a wedge between different facets of hunting.

Getting back to the original point of this thread: I've found no winter-killed deer on my land this year, as opposed to three carcasses last year. A small and perhaps statistically-meaningless sample, for sure...but the deer seem to be around in decent numbers, certainly no fewer than I was seeing last spring. Their condition also appears surprisingly good. I intend to limit myself to a meat buck this year as I did last, but based on what I see in my area I don't think it should be mandated for everyone.

Whitetail emptied the oat bucket again last night...Latest spring I've ever seen them still feeding in the yard.

Driving down outta the hills last night, the only jumper I did see sure didn't have any spring in it's step as it crossed the road infront of my rig...Looked kinda like death warmed over, odd the coyotes hadn't caught up to her yet...One thing for sure, the doe whitetail that do survive this winter won't be dropping many fawns, if any.

The ice up there still had snow on it and was as thick as it's been all winter...Splake were sure in good shape!

I spoke to the butcher at the local supermarket the other day when looking for a duck. Apparently a relative of his is an Outfitter and word is there will be a deer hunting season in Mb this year. He did not have any details, but said it may be bucks only, perhaps.
