A major update for you all with good new! As of today the SUB2000 Canadian version was approved by the Department Of State for export, after being rejected twice. This is great news!

Now for the RFB. As you all know, Kel-Tec had a verbal approval from a DOS export officer over a week ago if they were to remove the 7.62mm Nato from the Canadian versions, and re brand them .308Win, export permits would not be an issue. Well, Kel-Tec milled off the 7.62mm Nato on all the Canadian versions and had them laser etched .380Win to comply with DOS. Today the new applications were rejected again.

The VP of Kel-Tec got on the phone today with the Department Of State and demanded to speak with the the Division Chief for firearms exports at the US State Dept. personally about the RFB. He said that the RFB is advertised as 7.62x51mm, not .308, and even though Kel-Tec changed all the markings on the RFB to reflect that it is .308 he said the fact that they know that it is designed for 7.62mm NATO puts it on the list of things that cannot be exported. So he asked him, if the RFB was chambered specifically for .308, with .308WIN chamber reamers and headspace gauges then would it be ok to export. He said it would be absolutely fine to export if done that way.

Kel-Tec have the reamers and headspace gauges for .308WIN already, so the VP told him they will specifically chamber Canadian RFBs for .308WIN, not 7.62x51. Kel-Tec can do this fairly easily in the next week on all the Canadian RFBs. This will solve the problem. And this is coming from the Division Chief.

So we are very very close here. The new applications are going in tomorrow morning.

Great news indeed but honestly still dont understand what this big deal about 7.62x51mm vs .308win is all about , its technically the same damn cartridge shouldnt matter how the firearm is ####ing marked.

What a gong show down south.

I contacted Kel-Tec directly about something related to the RFB a few days ago.
They told me that they have sent it in for approval about 7 times now.
When it does finally arrive here, I hope they sell a ton of them. They (Kel-tec) certainly have gone far beyond what most other companies would have done.
Good on them for sticking with us.

Hear hear tootall, I agree, for seeing this through, Kel-Tec WILL get my business as well. I plan on being on an RFB "like a fat kid on a smartie"!!!

Cheers
Jay

That is good news. Always nice to see a U.S. maker not just giving up on getting their product out to us. Like most of Kel-Tec's guns the Sub2000 is not on my want list, personally, but it's a start. If the RFB gets here in a version that isn't restricted, I'll consider buying one.

Wow! Bureaucracy in inaction there! Kudos to Kel-Tec! A company willing to go through all that crap in order to service the relatively tiny Canadian market is worth our support. I'll definitely be looking at an RFB once they hit our shores.

Two big thumbs up from me for sticking with this...I understand how absolutely ridiculous these paper pushers are becoming...so on that note count me in as a "sure-thing" RFB purchaser when they arrive ("like a fat kid on a smartie" ;))

edit: as a side note...isn't it more preferable to have the .308 chamber overall (as it can handle both calibres...but not necessarily the other way around) considering most will be firing .308 from it (and not 7.62 NATO)...just throwing that out there.

Impressed that kel-tec stuck through this garbage, I think they are getting tired of the DOS playing games and wanted to make the point. It also defines the field a bit better so DOS has less room for games. I wonder if Kel Tec's factory is in a Dem or Rep state?

I've gotta say, that is one ugly gun that doesn't interest me, but God bless Keltec for sticking with the Canadian market and jumping through the hoops.

I sincerely appreciate that.

Why is it that the DOS has a problem with the export of 7.62mm rifles?

This is a bit of a piss off but I'd still like an RFB?

Why does Department Of State even care about these things ? If we're talking about guided missles or tanks then I'd understand. But semi-auto rifles ? They are not exactly advanced weaponry.
