A major update for you all with good new! As of today the SUB2000 Canadian version was approved by the Department Of State for export, after being rejected twice. This is great news!
Now for the RFB. As you all know, Kel-Tec had a verbal approval from a DOS export officer over a week ago if they were to remove the 7.62mm Nato from the Canadian versions, and re brand them .308Win, export permits would not be an issue. Well, Kel-Tec milled off the 7.62mm Nato on all the Canadian versions and had them laser etched .380Win to comply with DOS. Today the new applications were rejected again.
The VP of Kel-Tec got on the phone today with the Department Of State and demanded to speak with the the Division Chief for firearms exports at the US State Dept. personally about the RFB. He said that the RFB is advertised as 7.62x51mm, not .308, and even though Kel-Tec changed all the markings on the RFB to reflect that it is .308 he said the fact that they know that it is designed for 7.62mm NATO puts it on the list of things that cannot be exported. So he asked him, if the RFB was chambered specifically for .308, with .308WIN chamber reamers and headspace gauges then would it be ok to export. He said it would be absolutely fine to export if done that way.
Kel-Tec have the reamers and headspace gauges for .308WIN already, so the VP told him they will specifically chamber Canadian RFBs for .308WIN, not 7.62x51. Kel-Tec can do this fairly easily in the next week on all the Canadian RFBs. This will solve the problem. And this is coming from the Division Chief.
So we are very very close here. The new applications are going in tomorrow morning.
