Sorry, apart from explaining about the square bullets, bit, it appears to be obsolete.

Puckle demonstrated two versions of the basic design. One weapon, intended for use against Christian enemies, fired conventional round bullets, while the second variant, designed to be used against the Muslim Turks, fired square bullets, which were believed to cause more severe and painful wounds than spherical projectiles.:p Har Har

Did they ever test it out to prove/disprove that theory? Do you think the square bullets would ever make it out of the cylinder or end of the barrel?

There may be some truth to those theories because I notice that the Hezbollah muslims are using round ball bearings against the Jews. :>) :>)

i have a book with a description of one of these. it strikes me that such a smart man would be so stupid :D O well.

Come again? How is it that the precursor to the Vulcan minigun is stupid? Or maybe you're speaking of the Muslim v.s. Christian thing.

Remember that the Muslims had tried to take over the world prior to that eh. They got so far as conquering as far west as Vienna.

If Vienna had fallen, you'd be speaking arabic right now. Luckily the Hussars (polish cavalry) saved the day.

Our efforts to push the muslim hordes back into the middle east were almost successful, albeit difficult. You may have heard of them? Called the Crusades?

Muslim, 500 years ago, was like the word "Nazi" now, or it would be if the Nazi's hadn't been defeated but only pushed back into Germany.

You gotta take things in context. Also, it is important to know your history.

whoah there,i just meant a square bullet is a bad idea. true the muslims almost won, but at the time id rather life in Cordoba or Grenada than London or Paris :D I am very conscious of my history. the crusaders were also a bunch of whackoes (sack of Byzantium ring a bell), and there are instances where they cannibalized   . when puckle invented this gun, it was probably to fight piracy (courtesy of the Tunisians and Tripolitans). this can be the only thing it would be used for at this time, as muslim power in Europe was waning. Lepanto in 1571 basically broke muslim strength at sea, and it was only a matter of time until they were pushed back on land. That said, thanks to Moorish occupation in southern spain, we are left with beautiful arab architecture, as in the Alhambra, as well as many instruments :) and we owe some thanks to the poles, as you say. better horsemen there never were :)

The Crusades had nothing to do with pushing the "muslim hordes" back into the Middle East - they were a series of invasions of the Middle East.
Was it not the Ottoman Turks who attacked Vienna?

I was thinking, if it was meant for square bullets, it must have had a twist rate of some kind, maybe it was a slow twist, I would imagine for it to work it would have to have a small bearing surface. Maybe it would not need lands/bore like conventional rifling. I am also guessing chainfires would be a possible problem, although I understand there was some kind of early gatling style gun, I read this in a book called 'Gunboat Frontier', it was a US CG vessel of the 19th century

That's an interesting firearm, it's got me wondering about how they the made the barrel for the square bullets, possibly no twist ? I can imagine the damage it would do.
