B.C.'s conservation officers should be held accountable for record number of black bears killed, say advocates

Pacific Wild is calling for independent oversight of B.C.'s conservation officers after a record 603 black bears were killed last year.

Bears will soon be emerging from hibernation and environmental groups are worried that B.C.’s conservation officers will kill more this year than last.

In 2023, a record 603 black bears were killed by B.C. conservation officers, up from 493 the year before, according to provincial data.

“I think the biggest thing people need to know is these bears are not an animal to be feared,” said Ellie Lamb, a wildlife advisor with Pacific Wild and a longtime bear guide in B.C.

“The public does not want to continue to see these animals shot out of trees and cubs killed … it’s just unbelievable the trauma that the community members have had to endure seeing, you know, military-style weapons moving through their community.”

Better idea: Conservation starts fining people big for all the #### they do that attracts bears into communities.

I agree that bears shouldn't be feared, and like that person I don't like Conservation killing bears. But its neither the bears' nor conservations' fault that the bears are in your ####ing garbage you left out...

Can you say STUNNED!!

Interview with Ellie Lamb: Grizzly Bear Whisperer & Wildlife Guide

Pacific Wild has campaigned for years to end the grizzly bear trophy hunt, and celebrated alongside many First Nations and other NGOs when the ban was announced in late 2017. However, bears are still largely misunderstood and mismanaged. We interviewed wildlife guide Ellie Lamb to learn a little more.

"When conservation officers say they are killing bears because they are “dangerous”, it is simply not true. They are not a dangerous animal but gentle and empathetic. The females most of all are fair and peaceful to get along with."

Why do you think there is such a misconception around this?

Well, there’s definitely a lot of projection of fear through hunting groups and governments. We need to educate and help folks understand these dynamics so that they don’t assume the worst of these animals."

They do, they fined a lady 30 or 40k for feeding bears in whistler.

Edit: it was 60k but courts said that's to much and she only had to pay 10k. It should be a straight up 50k fine.. know/listen to the rules and one wouldn't have to worry

I don't mind if they shoot them, there clearly was a reason for it. They don't just shoot them for fun

Its nice that they fined her, but they don't fine most people. The vast majority of people get warnings, even multiple warnings, before any real action happens.

I also don't have a problem with COs shooting bears, I trust the COs to make the judgement call on whether a bear needs to be taken care of or not. I just think they'd have a lot fewer bears to deal with if they better enforced the laws that are designed to keep bears from becoming a problem in the first place (Now, to be fair, a lot of those laws are municipal/bylaw, so clearly this needs to be a joint effort between CO and city, but when you're getting 27k+ calls a year, up from 18k calls 10 years ago, clearly things are moving in the wrong direction.)

Here I thought Timothy Treadwell died in Alaska some years ago.

Yeah, bears are not dangerous they won't hurt you blah, blah,... Don't fear them, OK - but at least respect them and I do, havin' them walking around the yard for the last 20 years !

Hey, look at Timothy Treadwell who got eaten by his "pets" ! Great activist !

On another note, I had to take a work related bear aware course years ago. The city dwelling leftist BS instructor encouraged the people to donate apples, carrots to the wildlife shelter in order to feed orpahned black bear cubs.

He got into a real hissy fit when I told him that apples and carrots are not foods to be found in the wild for bears once they are ready to be realeased into the "wild". So, I concluded the animal shelter is accustoming the bears to human related food sources. The look on his face was priceless, Lol. What a goof !

There are several instances in Whistler , was this the women who also ran a Brothel from her condo ?

Kitimat, during LNG construction, they brought in well "educated managers" from somwhere ? As we all should know, Kitimat during the salmon runs is a hot bear country/town.

They arrested some of those "managers" for feeding a silvertip grizz from a second story appartment building. I mean, I had no words to point out the stupidity of some people...

But hey I'm a certified bear "awarer" !

That's a tall bear.

Polar Bears are apex predators. Black bears are opportunists. Grizzly bears are territorial and gluttons.

"When conservation officers say they are killing bears because they are “dangerous”, it is simply not true. They are not a dangerous animal but gentle and empathetic. The females most of all are fair and peaceful to get along with."

That is simply delusional. There is a good reason everyone is wary of a sow with cubs. It’s the mother bears compassion that gets you mauled.

What can you expect from someone who lives in a condo in the city,Disney has made fools of the general public dangerous bears usually were harvested by hunters and that kept the interaction down to somewhat of a reasonable amount. Now the aggressive ones are allowed to carry on and yes I have seen it first hand ,believe it there are bears being put down now that are not part of the big picture and so they should be .
