I need some tin to add to the soft lead I have. Awhile back there was a company from Montreal I think who was selling ingots of it and had a post on here. Anyone recall who that was? If not, is there a solder that could be used. Thanks

Listen to IR post#2. Pewter is 95% tin for the most part and is exactly what you are looking for. I just picked up over 200 pounds of it at a buck a pound. It was all old beer steins with glass bottoms, bent up decorative plates, salt and pepper shakers, goblets etc. Lots of 2nd hand shops will have this stuff on the shelves at very reasonable prices. In April, I bought over 50 engraved pewter mugs at an auction for $25 for the lot. They weighed out over a pound each. Yesterday I went to Value Village to check out their shelves and they had two heavy pewter flower vases that totaled over 5 pounds together for $2 for the set. The Thrift Shop as well as the Salvation Army stores often have items on their shelves made of Pewter as well.

It's easy to tell the difference Pewter bends very easily. It you can't bend it then it isn't Pewter. Also, there will usually but not always be a stamping on the bottom describing it as Pewter. Check out your local scrap metal dealer as well. They know what those old mugs are made from and they often have huge balls of solder or bars of Linotype on hand. Linotype doesn't have quite as much tin in it, maybe 80% but the rest is lead. Many old printing shops will have Linotype piled up in the basement or a back room in blocks of letters/numbers.
