Tiny Deer Hog Deer SUCCESS story#29

I totally understand the differences here and there, Rhys. I sure
hope you do get one of the little ones. I would like to see what
they look like. Carry on. Dave.

I was getting really confused when i started reading this thread..... Victoria, the islands, fallow deer....... It sounded like you were talking about BC on vancouver island and coastal islands. There are or were fallow deer hunts here in BC on van isle and the capitol is victoria LOL
Got deeper into the thread and had to go back and look at who the OP was and it all made sense haha
hope to see some pics with your mug beside a Hog Deer !

Well well well ,, i met a Hog Deer!!! unreal!!

Following on from last Trip

so, two weeks had just about passed by the time i was able to get back down to the Eastern tip of Victoria, this time i was going even further away into more known Hog deer country... small coastal strips still, but also large lake areas...... i was keen for this one.

First up , i had a mate from Melbourne join me and We over night backpack hunted up the beach about 3 km from the Car, mid way of that particular hunting ground...
i covered alot of ground around the area , looking for sign mostly an hoping to spook one in the thicker stuff... the bro covered alot of time behiind the Binos from the Sand dune look out, well at least i think he did, an wouldnt be suprised or bummed if he was havin a well earned rest. ha!

on the second day i was able to to find some sign an then snuck along an area and literally snuck up to a wallaby, unbeknown to both of us, (Wallaby and I) and it shot off from about 10 meters on the edge of a downward slope with a few game trails into the denser bush.... bugger.
i rubbed my boots on the ground an smudged out the prints to see what might come along tomorow or over night ... after doing this, an walking maybe 2-4 steps... Squeel and a flutter , sounded like a Bird was spooked but i see a Tan hide and i thought a White Tail ....
went back to camp and told the Bro, unsure if these hog deer had white tails or not, he actually doubted me a bit an checked Google on it ha ha!
squeels and the white tail, Yep- i laid eyes on some parts of my first Hog Deer!!! you beauty.

id seen maybe 6-10 different prints in our 6x2km area.... surrounded by private or beach. not many.
it ws isolated an the season is april, so spotlighting an out of season shootin takes it toll... however no duck shooting meant the deer were atleast there.

not much else on the back pack, So after the Bro headed back to the city, I got in touch with a Bloke who id not met but was heading into another area , just north about 30 minutes... (fairly standard between hunting areas)
with Sign low, i packed up and headed North.

This fella had duck shot here for 15 years or so and always camped along this section and often seen hog deer driving in at early am or night etc, an did some reccy walks to find signs an pop holes in a fence to private/water/feed. So i was kind of pretty stoked on just the sign alone in the new area cmpared to the other, down the road.

That arvo we walked through the area a bit, the Bro wanted to hunt along the fringe in the morning, typically where the deer are, right..?
but soon into the stroll with a ####ty wind, i called him out an said we needed to back out of here, roos were going everywhich way..... an hog deer prints noted making a Bee line outta dodge....ok.

That night around a drum fire, there was hog deer venison cooked and i got to try some, absolutely the nicest venison ive seen. it was pale and tender, no game taste what so ever... Gee that excited me, and perhaps was a stroke of luck as there wasa plan hatched fairly shortly after a feed , before bed.

I wanted to cut through the bush about 150-200m off the fence line, on the kangaroo trails... thinking the deer were going to be out off the private well before light, but may meander through the scrub stuff.... Also old mate was going to be trudging down the fence line at some point.

So that morning up real early, all preppared, snuck down the track to hit the fringe , roos everywhere again, and straight away i scanned the fringe obvious spots and said, "dude ill go in thru here and meet ya at the other end/fence. "
he agreed , both wished good luck, off we go.

i get on some roo trails and divert away from the fence line then start swooping back around parrelell to it, the ground opens up a bit an im slowly creeping along the trails as quietly as i can, A clearing up a head looks good, i pause up, step at a time stuff, stand, Nek Minnit out of no where, casual stride, a small Tiny Deer materialises , Left to Right, 30-40m out straight ahead.

WOW-
ok compose, and Raise the Kimber 7mm08 to my shoulder as i stood on the trails and watched this thing keep walking, as it was about to enter into the scrub again, i said "Oi", an he instantly froze and looked my way down the clearing.... Pop!
the sound disspated into the flat ground and scrub, i lose sight of it.... i grab the Camera out because no point running after it , that just happened.

then i see some bushes moving slightly, There it is! a FKN hog deer!!! wow!

i yelled out wildly, old mate figured it was a hit... he came over and we got busy field dressing after a lengthy photo session, discussion and a WTF do we do with these Tags lol.

- i went and did the check in station thing 30 mins away and it was a dampner on te experience but never mind maybe different next year...

i then stalked a nearby area before decided i knew those deer where there, so i stalked it again 2 mornings later and ALMOST got lucky again ona Hind!
the following two days i checked another section of this same park to minimal success, seeig only Sambar deer...

but man, Unreal for all of this to unfold in just 10 Seconds!

amazin what a little local knowledge does!

thankful to everyone for any help or info (none will read this cgn report)

super stoked, love the 708 162sst, a bit spewing it was a velvet spike! will attempt to mount it anywho! myself :)

* i got bogged the morning after the Deer, a bit of a hang over day per say and should of walked there but thought my hilux would go through anything, right :)

wrong.

few more photo spam!!

just wanted to note that this venison is by far the whitest and most easiest to eat that ive ever eaten!

i had tenderloins with veggies an chips tonight, gave them a wack flat, cut into 3 pieces like slabs of meat, fry in the pan with butter ..... holy hecka............

no wonder these things get poached hard by the 'multi cultural' melbournites
