Tipping your outfitter

Sheephunter, didn't realize you had a show! Good going man!

Would love to watch it except I have no TV. Well, have a TV but no cable/satellite. Too bad you guys don't stream over the internet. Might bite the bullet and get satellite one of these days so I can get WildTV.

The show airs on Wild TV. You can subscribe to Wild TV streaming service. No cable or satellite television needed. Check out their website for more information.

So if a TV show crew goes on a hunt and have a ####ty hunt or problems with the outfitter/guide etc, do they still promote that outfitter during their show and after????????

As well, if I was going with an outfitter or guided hunt, I certainly wouldn't want to be going the same time as a TV show crew. Because I am pretty sure I know who is going to get their A game.

Can't speak for anyone else but we definitely would not promote a poor quality outfit. We have walked away from a couple of hunts over the years right in the middle of them because we were uncomfortable with the way things were going. On the other hand we have shown a couple episodes where no animal was taken just because it was a great hunt. You'd think TV crews would get an outfitters A game and some times they do but other times they seem to get treated like a pain in the butt and little effort goes into providing a hunt.

If you're doing a guided hunt in Ontario, please tip if the service is good. Minimum wage for guides is about $102.50/day and guides usually get paid around that if not slightly more. So if you do a 10-18hr day its about $10.25-$5.70/hr, not even worth waking up for if you're not going to get a tip.

Also about the TV guys, they're not worth waking up for at all. They "pay" the outfitter in free advertising and they "tip" their guide in crap from their sponsors and golden handshakes. If their hunt isn't "TV worthy" it's never aired and they walk away with a free hunt. The Lawyer, carpenter, doctor sure as hell doesn't.

Thanks guys, I dont really care about the "tv personality" special rates and lack of tipping but thanks for chiming in.

15% is the magic number I guess!

here is my experience on owner/guide turkey hunt in Nebraska. this owner, was driving us around from spot to spot, not only was he texting or talking on his phone he was drinking as well.the first day it was one beer, then the next it was 3 and on the last day he had 6. he also cost my buddy and i a double on a pair of birds. one other thing he had way over booked and our first day he tried to guide 6 of us. this guy has been on a number of tv shows,so if you ever want to hunt Merriams in Nebraska pm me and i will tell you who not to book with.

I bet he was still upset if you didn't tip.

Funny thing is, If guides/outfitters give you poor service/a bad hunt you don't see them offering you money back. They still cry if you don't tip.

Bucky, sounds like you ran into a total idiot and I would hope that your other guided experiences have been better. Any guide or outfitter who drinks while working should be viewed in the same way as any other professional drinking while at work....fired if an employee and avoided if the owner. The most common theme throughout this thread boils down to service provision and compensation accordingly. Any service industry will have bad apples and lazy operators. Resource based tourism is a huge industry for Canada and the operators who align themselves with provincial bodies such as the Manitoba Lodge and Outfitters Association are showing an increased interest in maintaining professional affiliations. Very few if any of us are unconcerned in how we spend our hunting funds so I always educate myself my asking questions including gratuities before booking. Most outfitters will be candid with you.
