Tips for cleaning black powder residue from breechloader shotgun barrels

A note for sawdust. I've tried it and while it worked I would not advise it in a dry forest. I use hornet and wasp paper nests as they don't seem to burn

I’m as far south as you get in Ontario don’t have to worry about it much. But sawdust especially if it’s oiled(olive oil)over top a nitro card shouldn’t be that much of an issue.

black powder residue is easy to clean. i use plain warm water. hot water can cause flash rusting when it evaporates. i have even used cold water our of a creek to get the worst of the fouling, then hit it with some warm water when i get home just to make sure its clean.

i have tried warm water with downy, it worked very well BUT i found it would negatively affect the finish on the wood of the stock very quickly so i stopped, you probably wouldn't have that issue on a double barrel.

i have used warm water and windex but didnt notice any real difference over plain water.

i have also bought a name brand black powder cleaner.pure snake oil. yes it works but its a waste of money.

there are probably as many ways to clean black powder guns as there are people to tell you, but its not hard to clean. they didnt have windex 200 years ago and they got by just fine. its harder to clean milsurps after shooting corrosive ammo than it is to clean your black powder guns so get out there and make some smoke, just for the love god clean them when you are done.

Here's a good shot of Londonshooter in the front of the canoe while the moon was still up, what it's all about...

Mike sneak-shot me with his phone. I confess, even I find myself attractive under those light conditions.
So I'm going to start a companion thread to this one to discuss the side issue - that we felt our cartridges were not getting it done. We both made shots that confounded us when the ducks just kept flying. Anyway, it's a convoluted tale and going to take some pattern testing but I'll get the thread started and testing to follow (after deer season I guess).

Thanks, possibly best shot of the day!
Cell phone with flash turned off in low light, just keep steady.
Neat results, really pixelated if you blow the images up, but yes look like paintings.

Anyways back to the subject at hand, a water flush seems like the standard.
I’m not freaked out by the mess and the work anymore, doesn’t seem that bad, and if these remaining shells are a touch light for ducks I can bang’em off at grouse.

Sounds like a plan John and next year we’ll get some patterning in.
