i havent been out for deer yet this season due to surgery but ill be able to shoot by crossbow next month so i want to start planning now. ive never hunted deer past the first week of november so im not sure where to start. i can only shoot a buck which isnt going to help much...

how much different is it hunting bucks in the late season? it seems like theres only half the tracks in my usual hunting spots late in the season each year so im not sure where to start looking. i think its safe to assume that the deer will be alot more cautious because last week was the shotgun hunt around here and theres another in early december i believe.

Right now would be more likely be classified as mid-season or the RUT. Great time to get out and see a buck. Find does and you'll find bucks. Late season tactics usually refer to the post-rut and is all about food source. This usually occurs after the 2nd week of December (unbred does have second estrus 30days after 1st rut if not bred putting the "second rut" around the 1st week of December).

in my area i believe the rut is actually THIS week, might of started thursday or so. We didnt see much big bucks and neither did a lot of other gangs last week. The ones we did get, one had a good swollen neck on wednesday night, the big 8 point from monday was kinda swollen, not as much as the other. I'd hunt all all day and find where the does are feeding, bucks will be close.

He's asking about next month

Doh.. didn't see that.

In the late season I'd try mostly still hunting, moving very slowly through the woods, hopefully in areas you know hold deer.

Focus on food areas if you know 'em, and back to mostly early morning/early evening deer movement.

There is the mythical late rut, so bleats may work too, but I'd try more social sounding calls.

thanks for the tips guys. id love to be out right now during the rut but it simply isnt possible right now as i cant grip at all with my left hand. in all the areas i hunt the bush is surrounded by corn, beans or apple orchards so the deer just wander wherever they please.

i guess ill just have to wait a couple weeks and get out there to see where they are most active and just spend alot of time in my blind...
