tips for refinishing a mosin nagant stock

Hey guys so here she is a 1943 mosin nagant. As you can tell the Russian Vanish is very flaky and sheds on me when I shoulder it. I normally leave military rifles alone but this one is just too much. Any tips on how to do it properly?

Just get some red tinted shellac flakes, disolve in alcohol and re-varnished the stock. New shellac when applied on stock will disolve and blend in with the old flaky one.
