Tips on M305/M14 ownership

Hey all, new to the forums, this site has been a great source of info thus far.

Had a few questions regarding the Norinco M305/m14:

-Am looking to replace the synthetic stock with a wooden stock. I have read here and else where that USGI m14 stocks fit this rifle well:
1) Is this a good option?
2) Can anyone recommend some good companies to purchase wooden stocks for this rifle?

-I have read that it is generally a good idea to replace the Norinco bolt with a USGI bolt (improves accuracy, allows safe firing of commercial .308, and prevents eventual headspace problems???).
1) Is this true/possible?
2) If so is the Norinco bolt interchangeable with a Springfield bolt? If not any suggestions where to buy a good replacement bolt?
3) Can these rifles safely fire commercial .308? I have read that the headspace on these rifles is safe for 7.62 NATO but not commercial .308 (I had always thought they were interchangeable??)

Also very interested to hear personal experiences with this rifle or any suggestions/tips which answer questions which I have not asked!

I apologize if this info is a common topic, will continue to research the web and search the forums for answers. Thanks for any input!

No worries, we got yer back.

Nah, there's no real NEED to rush out and buy a USGI bolt (if you can even find them for sale). The steel in a current Norc bolt is just fine. Headspace is your typical battle rifle (read: large for bolt interchageability in the field) dimensions!

I'm a lover of the Boyd's Gun Stocks (google is your friend) Walnut M1A stock and as long as you keep your order under the $ 100 USD limit, Boyd's will ship to Canada, IIRC.

I've found that most of the USGI bolts I have handled have DROPPED straight into the Norc M14. A few were tight and might need lapping. I'm waiting for M14doctor's input here. He is the practicing (daily) 'smith with this platform! :D

Regarding commercial ammo, .308 from local sources, there have been many, many instances of M14 Norc addicts achieving success with said ammo. Nobody's #### has fallen off AFAIK.

There, does that help?

Cheers and welcome to the addiction!

Barney

*Edit* beat me to it, Barney......

Can't go wrong with a Boyd's stock. Beautiful wood.

- I have never had any issues arise from using the stock bolt in my 2007 purchased Norinco. It is possible, but you may want someone to check headspace, and lap your bolt for you correctly.
- I have had 0 issues using milsurp ammo, commercial .308 ammo, OR handloads.

The only thing I would suggest you get right away is a better op rod guide, extra mags, and ammo. The op rod guide is easy to install yourself, and I find that it makes the action much smoother.

- TOP TIP - Get in on one of Hungry's M14 clinics. You will be bombarded with a wealth of knowledge, walk away with a better understanding of your rifle, and realize you made a good choice.

If you are a thrifty( cheap) guy like me, Boyds is selling unfinished M1A wood stocks.
They are $79.
Just sand it and stain it with some boiled linseed oul yourself.
Buy a front stock cap ferule and a front stock swivel and screw set for about $15 total and you're set.
It takes some minor sanding to fit it, but a monkey could do it.
All Norc parts fit into the M1A with relative ease.
I posted some pics here:
http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=688562
I have since fixed the small gap under the receiver by simply doing a bit more sanding on the spot to the right of the receiver.
The Norc ones slant from the upper inside of the stock to the lower outside very slightly.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info!! Getting really excited about picking one up.

Mac/Hungry: Are the clinics run all year round?? It may be a month or two before I have my rifle in hand

Mac: I'll look into it right away. Any suggestions for good companies to pick up m14 accessories from? So far Marstar seems to be the only name Ive heard repeatedly

Travis: Thanks for the tip, may just do that! Am kind of looking to turn this into a bit of a project rifle. Checked out Boyds, beautiful stocks

I love the boyds stock i have BUT the boyds (mine anyway) isnt a snug fit like the original plastic stock and you need to do a little sanding to get it to sit flush as well as popsicle stick fix & SAFETY CHECK.

I have used priv ammo with no problems, 100 rounds only, the rest are all reloads.

If you do go for boyds then it will look something like this.

My advice is don't even think about getting one..................................the reason is: this platform is highly contagious and once you started it you will crave for more and if you don't believe me ask H2O MAN (our neighbor South of the border) how many Norinco or Poly he has you will understand why I said that (LOL)!:D

Seriously, this rifle give you most fun in terms of $ value vs many other rifles but if you want to modify it then the sky is the limit and its all depends on how well you want it shoot (or how well it looks).

And don't forget to post pics of your new toy after your contracted the disease!

f55: Gotta say man, I love the look. Wanted your rifle since I was a kid ;)
A little sanding and touch up I can handle! Thanks for the links, Im sure I will refer back to them both quite a bit.

Thanks all! Did not expect such overwhelmingly positive replies and reviews!
Might be a few months before I get my rifle and start adding mods, but will make sure to upload pics asap!

I have read that it is generally a good idea to replace the Norinco bolt with a USGI bolt

I personally feel this has been spread around a little too much ;)

I have 7400 rounds through my 2009 Poly.
Recently had it at Tact Ord for a weld job on the barrel band and a quick look over prior to sinking yet more cash into a Krieger heavy swap.

I thought the bolt was mint, just wanted a second experienced opinion while I was there.

In short, a Krieger swap and another 7000 will be happening.......with the stock receiver, bolt, Op rod & gas cylinder.

I truly think you can put the bolt concern to bed ;)

Don't want to add clutters to this thread so I started a new thread about a report done by Different ( Lee Emerson ) on Chinese m14s bolt a while back.

hitch.bd: looks good man, let me know how she shoots!
Tactical and Spcamno:Thanks for the info, its a huge help!!

Have any of you guys heard of treelinem14.com? Good news, bad news? Really like some of the stocks they offer and they ship to canada without an order limit

WHY DO YOU INSIST ON POSTING BULLSH*T?
you were already called on it in the other thread

Thank you for your comment!

I did not consider the information I received is what you refer to "BS", have you spend the time, money and afford to perform such test yourself?

I never said the stock Chinese bolt is unsafe to fire and whether the test performed or arranged by Different (Lee Emerson) is relevant to the current batch of Norinco or Poly in uncertain.

I appreciate many other poster's note as the test was done on the pre 90's Chinese rifle in the US as they can not represent all Chinese M14s currently in the Canadian market.

If you don't like what you see you don't have to believe in it and it is up to the reader to explore whether the information is relevant or not unless you have statistic to prove the test was done wrong or you know more than Different otherwise I don't think your post is less "BS" than what I have posted.;)

^^ Oh Oh, here we go again. :bangHead:

My guess, and I'm likely wrong on this, is that you are the proud owner of a Springfield M1A and to that end, everything else is lower and second rate. Am I right? Why else would you want to slag the Norkies with that hopelessly outdated drivel? Oh that's right, it's the internet and it's your right to voice your opinion to the uneducated and uninformed.

Why am I upset? Because way back when, a Springfield owner scared the poop out of me when I was uninformed. How did I know about being a Springfield owner. The person later admitted it about a year later on another post. But you know what, guys like Hungry, Claven, M14 Doc and others shared a wealth of information which all proved to be truthful and accurate. I'm now converted.

Go away with that nonsense and stop scaring folks. You have no clue.

Actually this beauty wants anyone with an M14 NOT to take it in the bush and go hunting with it. Thankfully people like M14Doctor & Tony Tig's never heard his complaint and bagged a few tasty bucks with there M14's. Can't wait for the phone call to start sampling the goodies and maybe help them make some saugages.

I took it out yesterday and shot it. It shoots great! It is a lot of fun and had no FT (anythings).
WARNING- Look at your front sight before you go to the range!!! I didn't, I noticed when I got there that the pin was waaaay right of center. I grabbed my trusty multi bit tool kit with 40 bits, none of them were the right bit. It must be a metric allen key because all the imperial ones were close but no cigar. So I wound up changing point of aim left 6" to hit the bull.
