Titegroup vs Universal Clay for .45 and 9mm

I went to buy some Titegroup but William's was out. I read Universal Clay was good for .45 so I bought some of that. I am reloading .45 and 9mm. Can anyone here compare the two powders for .45 and 9mm? Is one cleaner burning, more accurate, etc.

I have been using 231 in my 9MM only because I load .45acp as well and find the powder works well in both. While the 231 is very good in the .45acp it is a bit of a compromise in the 9MM, a round that favours a slightly slower powder like Unique.

I didn't like Titegroup in my .45acp. It tends to leave a lot of burning on the outside of the case. I suspect it doesn't reach it's peak pressure as quick as some powders do.

4.4 gr of Titegroup under Montana Gold 125 gr FMJ ran Avg. vel. 1187 fps and had a Standard deviation of 7 PF 147. I never went lower than that to test results. Some suggest Unique to be a good posder for the 9MM. I found this to be the case as well but the powder doesn't meter all that well out of a Dillon press so I stick with 231.

No comment on Clays, never tried it.

I shoot lead mostly so I never worry about how clean a powder burns. With lead bullets comes fouling from the lube so I just resign myself to cleaning my guns after every shoot.

Actually I think he means Universal, and not Clays (they are 2 different powders, why they named them like that ..... ). Clays is a clean, fast burning powder, faster than Titegroup, and great in 45 except for max loads.

Universal (clays) is much slower, in the range of Unique, (much slower than Titegroup), and can be used for max loads in 45. It should also be a good powder for 9mm. I haven't used Universal.

The guys at Higginsons told us recently that the factory is behind on Titegroup and even the factory dosn't have any.

If you use it, and you find it, buy all you can carry

I'm still sitting on 12 pounds of the SP-81 from Higginsons, which burns like a fast batch of Clays Universal.

I've been using Titegroup but ran out. Can't find any! I went back to my true and tried Bullseye.

Is that different than Universal by Clays technology? My bottle says 5.0gr for 115 9mm and 6.4gr for 185 .45.
