TNA VR-66 Good choice for a budget semi?

Looking at picking up my first semi and initially I was going to go all in on the 1301 but the election results have me leery (and generally miserable) so for the time being I am looking at something more budget friendly. I am seeing a lot of positive feedback here on the VR-66 and it has the style I prefer with the fixed stock. Liking the chrome lined barrel as well.

So, what are your impressions? My main question is around LOP since I have shorter, Sicilian t-rex arms lol Anyone put a limbsaver on it?

Other options I thought might work would be the Stoeger M3K or the Hunt Group MX4. All ears on other suggestions in that price range. Thanks in advance for any intel.

I’ve had just about every “tactical” semi auto shotgun that we can get here and I’d personally go with one of the M4 Clones in that price range. I prefer them to the Stoeger M3K 3-gun. I haven’t owned a VR-66 but have shot a few inertia turkish guns and they seem ok for the price.

Would be interested in hearing some long term reviews as well.

LOP on the VR66 is quite short, I put a slip on recoil pad on mine to add an inch. So far great gun for the money, but low round count. I've had a Charles Daly and a Revolution Armoury M4 knockoffs. Prefer the VR66, seems better built, but inertia vs gas does have the M4's shooting softer.

Appreciate the feedback! Looks like the M3K has an even longer lop so that might not work.

Glad you are happy with it. I assume the Benelli M4 recoil pad is a go?

I have had mine since last fall, so not that much mileage on it. Build quality is pretty good for the price. I initially had a fair number of failures to feed where the shell would half fall out of the ejection port and jam into the back of the chamber or the lifter would only get it part way up to the chamber and the shell would jam into the back of the chamber there. That seems to have cleared up with more use and it has been trouble free for a bit now. Fingers crossed.

The stock recoil pad is a great hockey puck, so a Limbsaver is a good idea. Stock LOP on mine is 14.25", which is OK for me for a trap gun, but is long for tactical/3-gun type of use. I plan to cut the stock down and put a softer pad on it this year.

Recoil is substantial. The gun is very light (~6lb), which makes it nice to carry but the inertia locking system absorbs virtually no recoil, so it kicks like a 6lb pump shotgun. The M4 clone gas operated guns are much nicer to shoot because of this.

While I have the VR66 now and I'm not planning on getting rid of it, the M4 clones are very attractive and I would look at them closely in your shoes.

Thanks Mark, this is good stuff. Recoil noted.

On the M4 clones, any in particular you prefer? I was checking this one out on Tenda but could not find much info on it.

The M3K was definitely a long LOP compared to the adjustable M4 style Telescopic.

I’ve had no issues with the M4-style stocks while using body armour or thicker clothing and the weight of the M4-style guns and gas system make the felt recoil much better than an inertia gun for sure. That said, my Mossberg 930 Tactical, Benelli M4 and M4 clone had lighter felt recoil than my 1301 as well.

Thanks. Which M4 clone did you purchase?
