Hi all,
Been looking at buying a TNW suomi m31 for a while but haven't yet. I have a lead on one for a decent price, but I'm wondering if they are decent guns. Seems reviews are all over the place and quality is nowhere near the originals. Love the history side of it but also don't want a bubba'd boat anchor.

i bought one and the barrel was VERY loose. maybe it just needed a shim but i wasnt happy with it so i returned it.
if you buy one make sure it has some descent welds holding the front end on to the receiver or it may come apart wile shooting it.
with all that said i still want one. just not a defective one.

There are reports of failed welds. I suppose that if the gun has been used, and is working well, it is likely to continue doing so.
With the NR barrel, these are big guns.

I had one. It had all sorts of problems feeding, but nothing a little polishing wouldn't fix. Very heavy for what it is. Accurate. Barrel was a little loose, so I added a noting and that tightened it up.

It's been my experience with the Suomi's that the non-restricted barrels are the majority of the problems with them. Poor fit, poor finish on the feed ramps and, from talking to TNW themselves, they said that it was their opinion that the weld breaking issue was attributed to the longer barrel and the extra pressure put on the barrel sleeve because of the extra length and pressure generated, which they and the design did not take into account. Not sure if that is the case or not, but in using the proper military length barrel, I've never had an issue with feeding (comparing the feed ramps between the NR length TNW barrels, and the originals, there is a very noticeable difference), or the welds breaking.

Also found that the shorter Restricted barrels tended to shoot better than the NR length ones.

All of which is kind of annoying if you want to play with them in the bush. Either fix the NR length barrels issues, or play at a range.

tl;dr - Fun gun, heavy, shoots well (consistently hitting a gong at 300m), can be quirky, hate the NR length barrel.

I like them. The wife has one and she likes it a lot. The only negative things she has ever said about it is trigger pull and the firearm are on the heavey side for her.
Its a fun plinker, not a serious war ready smg.
Oh and it looks cool with the drum mag as well :)

I have one one and I love it. I have to tighten up my barrel too. Mine seems to be very accurate even with a little wiggle in the barrel. It's a fun gun to take to the range and is cheap to use. The only issue I had was the pinned mag took some of the fun out of it.

I own one, (Got a great deal on it so I jumped on it) Had the standard welds cracking issue (when I got it), Pulled it off, cleaned it and reinstalled the piece. Shoots beautifully now, Had one Jam and I think it was a mag issue.

Trigger is fine for "military" and although it is heavy it does shoot well.

I would only buy one in person after looking for one that has decent welds. That's what I did, as well as using an original 12" (restricted) barrel, ran great, I prefered the drum mags off the bench as they don't get in the way as much as the stick mags.

Three poor quality spot welds don't cut it apparently.

Indeed, looks like the metal wasn't well prepared for the center one which on mine was about 1/8 inch of welded material in a 3/8 hole the rest was just filler. one side weld cracked, and the other one held and was tough to remove.

I have one I bought new a couple of years ago. Have had no problems yet. It's accurate, though a bit heavy for what it is. And 5 rounds go by pretty quick.
