I have a 20 ga 1100 on the way and was wondering what you feed it for clay target shooting.....do they eat just about anything or should I be looking something in particular when I go to buy a case of shells.
Thanks

1100

I wish you well with the 1100 venture. Hope you have less failures with yours than I did with the ones I owned. Suggest you stay away from the Winchester low end stuff as that almost assures problems with the 1100 in fail to eject and lock the slide back after round fired. Pain the in keester when shooting doubles.

First of all are you getting a 2 3/4 or 3". Is it a sporting or skeet/target model.

If 2 3/4 / skeet/target model It will reliably eat just about anything. Regular loads as well as the hotter stuff. The low end remington gun clubs in 20 gauge if you can find them will work well as well as the winchester economy loads (can think of their proper name right now).

But I can guarantee winchester AA or Remington STS will cycle either the 2 3/4 or 3" reliably, they are high quality target loads.

If it is a 3" model there is a good chance that it will reliably cycle the cheap stuff just as well as the 2 3/4 model, though there is the possibility that it won't like it much. In that case the higher end stuff will work fine, just lightens the wallet.

I have and had 1100's 2 in 12 1 in 20 and 1 .410

All were very reliable despite what everyone will say. People love to rave about their 1500 spaghetti gun, when an old 1100 can stand up and hold their ground to any of them. They are after all the MOST POPULAR semi-auto ever. Though I must admit I bought a new 1100 in march, and I am disappointed with its quality, not like the real remingtons of the 70's and 80's

Best of luck

The only thing I have to stay away from with mine is the cheap-o Winchester Universal with the thin aluminum case heads, as I get extraction problems (and have seen many problems in pump guns and doubles also).

Otherwise everything runs through it.

Ditto. Those shells were like 59$ for 250 this summer at LeBaron, so I bought a few flats. Lots of FTE's on my 870's!

10$ more you can get Challengers, made in Canada, and I've never had a jam with one, either in my pumps or semi's.

x2 on the Challangers...one flat of cheap Winchesters from Wal-mart was enough for me...not really semi-auto when the casings jam. I am using a 1100 G3 20 guage. It will accept 2 1/2 or 3".

I have a 20 GA 1100 and it shoots fine with everything I've ever put through it (and it's pushing 15000 rounds now!). It works with the Walmart federal and Winchester "
special" ammo but occasionaly (read that to mean about once every hundred or so rounds) will leave a round in the chamber.

I've had a mixed bag of results with my Remington 1100 Classic Trap. It will reliably cycle 1200 and 1350 fps shells, but if you start going lower than that with target loads it will start getting fussy with FTE's.

I find the main problem is the O-ring. If its lose, or worn in any fashion, it won't cycle with the cheap stuff. Its a fantastic and well made gun if you feed it something with enough power to reliably drive that gas system.

Best thing you can do is get a box of really well made O-rings from Canadian Tire or wherever that fit it well and keep those on hand.

They truly are Wal-Mart grade junk. WM was selling them for around $22/100 this year, and every Trap & Skeet Sunday saw our dowel getting a good workout tapping them out of various shooters' guns.

I also noticed several per 100 pack where the head was actually crushed on one side right out of the box, and lots of faulty crimps as well.

We had Winchester and Kent target ammo at the range, and had zero problems.

20 gauge "Skeet B" 1100 (2 3/4" only) is the model. I was looking at getting a case of Win AA from Lebaron's they should be sufficient from what I'm reading.
Thanks guys

The skeet B will cycle anything. Unless the brass/alum./steel case head is faulty. But the older guns have pretty large chambers, not to many problems, if you do encounter failure to extract, check your extractor for wear, as they do wear and are cheap to replace, though can be difficult to do the acutal replacement.

Someone in an earlier post in this thread said their classic trap didn;t like light loads. I have classic trap new in march, and it cycles my 7/8 oz. soft reloads pefectly, have yet to have failure. I would suggest checking that you have you gas rings installed the correct way around, that you are using an o-ring with the proper thickness, I stick with the remington ones, they are more expensive but the work and last longer. Also check to see that you do not have a gas port blocked, or dirty, if they are there may not be enough gas getting to the action to cycle the gun.

Best of luck to both of you

AA is excellent ammo. Save the hulls; if you won't reload them, someone sure will.

I have an 1100 hundred, not sure if its a skeet model or anthing, i dont think it is though.
Its 2 3/4 only and the only time it has ever failed on me was a failure to feed, and that was because i put it back together incorrectly after a total cleaning. It was my first gun and the most reliable shotgun i own. I have never had any issues with any brand of shot shells that i put through it. Enjoy you new toy!

The best ammo I have found for my semi's 20/12ga's is Challenger --- just as good as AA'S and STS at less money and they are Canadian made. But Canadian First!
Cheers

The main thing with an 1100 is to keep it clean and oil lightly and replace your O ring once a year. If you have one that is giving you problems it is more than likely that the gas ports in the barrel are partially plugged. Take a pin vise and a very small drill and clean the ports.
