to bed or not to bed a 22, that is the question.

just wanted to swing in and finish this thread off.

finally was able to get the gun out to the range with the new stock on it.
i didnt do anything to it, groups are still nice and tight.

so i dont think ill worry about bedding it.
the action is uber tight in the stock already and the barrel if fully floating.

im gonna order up some mid range ammo and see what kinda groups i can get this old girl down too.

thanks for all the help guys.

It may improve accuracy.
But we're talking semi auto .22 LR accuracy at .22LR ranges right? The harmonics created by a .22 LR being fired are already probably well contained and consistent by the tight stock fit and heavy floated barrel of your setup.

So what is that going to be at best? Shave off 0.1" at 50 meters? Bedding is a messy, touchy job. I just did my M14 actually and it was a nail biter. 2 weeks of careful research, prep and planning before I even mixed my epoxy.
It worked very well and I can say that my groups have improved by about 3/4" at 100 meters. So less than a 1 MOA improvement for all that work.

Honestly I debated bedding my 597 as it is unbelievably accurate for a stock semi auto .22 but the amount of effort, time and money that I would put into it to shrink my groups from 3" at 40-50 meters with my tech sights to 2.75" maybe at the same distance is pointless.
If you're going to compete in precision matches where the winner wins by calipers and hundredths of an inch then guys with stock condition bolt guns will smoke you every time regardless how much money you put into a 10/22.
Just something to consider from someone who was debating for a while myself.
You have to weigh the time and work required (or money if you're going to pay someone else to do it) and what you really expect/need/want the actual results to be after it's done.

exactly.

i think with the set up i have now and once i flesh out some nice mid range ammo (SK or such) i think that will be sufficient for what i wanted to accomplish with this gun.

for fun i picked up a bull barrel harmonic dampener and im gonna try it but i have to laugh....... a harmonic dampener on a bull barrel for a 22LR, hehe!
like the bull barrel is doing much of any movement on a 22.
