To build a 10/22 or buy a Tuff-22

Hey All,

I have been shooting more 22lr lately, our club runs rimfire prs events indoor during the winter, and some outdoor stuff in the summer (have yet to try). I would like to get something better suited than my savage 64 fxp. It is fine for plinking, but I find it ill suited for my current needs.

I wanted to know your opinions on if I should buy a 10/22, add an aftermarket trigger/send it out to get tuned, and do some of the other 10/22 modifications. Or if I should go with something from DLASK like their Tuff-22 with a 12.5 or 16 in barrel. Or build one with bits from DLASK and an aftermarket barrel (I have been reading through the threads, there seem to be lots of great suggestions on good barrels). I like the idea of supporting a Canadian manufacturer.

I like the semi-automatic, particularly for the speed challenges, and the weak hand/weak eye stages.

What would you all do?
 
I have not tried the TUF 22 but I can tell you it is very easy to make a 300$ 10/22 into a 1000$ 10/22. Take's about a year and many Canada Post delivery's. If I had to do it again
I would save up and get a KIDD or Volquatzen right off the bat and have a fine gun. Just my 2 cents. I also am enjoying the ORPS it's a blast.
 
Buy the pre-built. Think of the time ($) and the parts cost. Ruger needs a trigger replacement,either a kit or sent to the US for work. The receiver needs internal polishing and a new buffer. The bolt can also need work and the barrel can be a “crap shoot”. One advantage of the Tuff22 is the large capacity mag if you want a “mad minute”

I'm of the same opinion. I built a rifle for ORPS on Dlask parts. Wish the TACSOL rifles were available at the time.
 
If you buy a Kidd super match it will be around $3000 Canadian when you get it, which could take 6-12 months. Volquartsen can be had from Sylvestres, a sight sponsor, for around $2000 with taxes and shipping. Kidd parts are extremely hard to get if you want to build with them. The receivers from DLASK,Kidd and others are manufactured to much higher tolerances and much more rigid than factory receiver. The best most economical way IMO is to buy a Dlask complete gun. Put together in the factory by people that do it for a living. Not Mr home gunsmith. It will function properly and be very accurate for a very reasonable price.
 
Thank you for all the responses so far! Sounds like a completed rifle is a better way to go, from your responses so far.
I have been curious about the Bergara, I have heard a few people talking about them, but no one I have spoken to has tried one yet.
 
I currently have more in two 10/22's than I care to mention.
Buy the best and cry once.
My Dlask Barrel is swaged so tightly into the action . . . it may never come out.
Don't suggest heating the action . . . that is how I got it in there in the first place!
 
Not sure how heavy you want the barrel for PRS rimfire. I’ve never been involved so I can’t comment.

Just go with a Dlask built rifle. If you want a lightweight barrel they have Kidd barrels. If you want heavy get a Dlask (Green Mountain). Can also get a Kidd bull barrel.

It’s going to be cheaper and easier to just buy a Tuff 22 without your choice of barrel and trigger. The Dlask receiver is way better quality than the Ruger. Dlask builds 10/22s the way Ruger should have.
 
Building has its own satisfaction. Picking parts , sourcing them , Waiting to come in stock etc . Built three 22lr one 22wmr and one 17hmr off a magnum . Not cheap to do but you get exactly what you want . Used to be a place in the states that had everything. They stopped shipping to Canada . Maybe with the new Itar they will ship again . After I post I’ll try to find them (name ) . The tuf 22 gets you in to the 25 mag game again . You can buy the receiver . There’s a ton of take off parts laying around to get you a working rifle then change things as you get them . A take off barrel cheap plastic factory stock aa bolt and trigger and your good to go . I have so many extra take off parts from the original 10/22 that I just kept because they are pretty much worthless . If you go the tuf route and need a new factory take off barrel I’m sure a quick want to buy factory barrel , stock and trigger for under a 100 and you’ll be into a working 1022 . Just make sure you buy the two pins and the v block when you grab the tuf22 . Then just go from there . Just remember stock and bull barrel go hand and hand . The rest just buy as you see it or becomes available and switch . Might take a year to get all the parts you want as they come back into stock . In the end you’ll have the exact gun you want and 25 rd mags
 
I built a tuff 22 recently, barrel shank needed quite a bit of sanding and heating the reciver to go together. the front hole for the mag wasn't champhered right. The chamber mouth on the 12.5" was way to sharp and wouldn't feed worth a crap. Oh and the chamber and throat needed allot of polishing to stop it from leading. The tuff 22 mags are a gimmick.... sold mine after a couple uses. Probably worth it to buy there cnc bolt too, as everything from ruger looks like old cast iron tractor parts, and not the good john deere, more like massy lol. But I had an old bolt, trigger group and stock kicking around. Oh yes and the old ruger birch stock needed allot of inlet work.
 
If you're thinking of building off a donor, bear in mind that only factory parts you may be left with are the receiver, bolt, charging handle, takedown bolt and v-block (most of us upgrade the stock, barrel and trigger at minimum).

A basic tuf22 receiver, dlask bolt, Kidd charging handle, adjustable v-block and a new takedown bolt is $445 before tax and shipping from dlask. A new stainless 10/22 is $450+tax at Cabelas. Blued models are $100-130 less, and you're still playing with mediocre factory parts in the end.

I just ordered a Kidd UL barrel for my factory stainless 10/22 that I've owned for years. If it wasn't already sitting in the safe, with an already upgraded stock and trigger, buying a donor to upgrade wouldn't even be on the table.

The complete tuf 22 rifle is excellent value, but still needs a trigger and the barrel is heavy. The bergara BXR is the one I'd be buying, as it needs nothing.
 
I recently build a brand new rifle for target work around a TUFF 22 receiver. The rest of the gun is all KIDD. I went with a KIDD ULW barrel, bolt, charging handle and 2 stage trigger. I went with the Magpul x22 Hunter stock. Everything was bought from DLASK except the trigger (Thanks Leigh!!).
My total cost including tax was $1500.00

Where did you get ur Kidd two stage trigger? Thanks
 
I bought a tuf22 last fall and couldn't be happier with it. Mine has a dlask 16.5" heavy barrel on it. Can shoot about 1" fairly consistently at 100yds from a bench. Now I just need to transition those results to ORPS where you can end up in some awkward shooting positions.

Thanks for replying. I have two single stage and two 2 stage and there is no better trigger that Ive laid my finger on. I think I bought the last of Dlask arms stock of a few Kidd parts, especially their triggers. Heard they will no longer be selling Kidd products which is too bad.Kidd parts are extremely hard to get. I basically built the same gun with a Kidd 20 inch stainless match barrel and all Kidd guts including the tapped trigger pins and set screw barrel block sitting in a Victor Titan with the Spike. Gun is amazingly accurate but so is my Dlask rifle with Kidd trigger and Magpull stock. Cheers and good shooting.

Yes now only in the US.
