to buy a .338 or not

looks like OP stated in post #12 that recoil is a non issue.

A guy can convince himself of anything if he just wants to talk himself into it. The reality is it will kick hard. It's just physics.
If the recoil don't get ya the noise will.

I owned a .338 Lapua (Savage 110 FCP) for about 96 hours. I bought it new from a dealer as an impulse buy because I got it for such a great deal (they were liquidating their entire Savage inventory). But I realized that the longest range I have available to shoot where I live is only 700 meters. I was doing that already with my .308. If I had a place to stretch out to 1000 meters or more, then I would have kept it. But I found the .308 to be challenging and thus fun, and to be honest, it was cheaper. And so for where I live, a .338 rifle capable of shooting a mile was unnecessary. So I sold it to a fellow CGN'er and he got an even BETTER deal than I did (I lost $200 on the transaction).

Anyways, my advice to you is ask where you're going to shoot it. If you're doing target shooting within 700 meters or less, then a cheaper round would be wise. But if you're hunting big game at a distance, or target shooting past 1km, then absolutely go for it, it looks like a good deal (assuming the seller can demonstrate that it actually shoots accurately).

BadAsMo: I honestly don't recall stating anywhere what the rifle weighs...its not a heavyweight by any means but she does tip the scales around 10lbs as it currently sits. I'm also not convincing myself of anything in regard to the recoil, my hunting rig is a Tikka T3 lite (6 lb bare rifle) in 300WM and kicks like a mule, i know what it feels like to be beat up by a rifle which is why that one stays in the safe unless I'm hunting moose or elk (yes it is still a 1-2 MOA rifle...just not all day). like i said previously the recoil of the .338 with the magna port AND muzzle brake is surprisingly mild and quite enjoyable to shoot. comparable, as i said to my savage 10PC in .308 caliber. I would suggest you colleague who is afraid of his 30-06 take up bow hunting....or shoot a .243 or similar caliber at critters.

I do fully intend to put something a little bit more classy on her for a scope, not too sure what ill be putting on it but it will certainly have target turrets and be quality glass. a problem to ponder when my skills are to the point where i can consider taking thousand yard shots at steel or paper

AstuteObserver: I really did have to think about where I would want to shoot this gun because as you say...out to probably 800 yards or so the .308 will do just fine so long as the guy behind the trigger has the skills to do it. Right now I'm not able to shoot the 1000 yards that this gun is capable of, but i need to mess around with it a little bit first anyways. when i do want to shoot longer distances i have access to my grandparents land in saskatchewan where i easily have 1000 yards to stretch out the .338. I also plan on looking for places out in the bush where i can SAFELY reach out further that is closer to home

You da man...
Party on yo

The gun started life as a sako Finnbear and the stock was custom for the original owner....I am now looking for a different stock though because the raised cheek rest interferes with my grip on the gun (I'm a southpaw)
