To hunt or not to hunt.

With the first good snowfall behind us, I'm finding that deer were harder hit in my area than I realized. Little sign of ANY bucks and it seems we were seeing the same handful of does over and over again. Worst of all we seem to have a number of motherless calves on the property which will have a tough time on their own. I've also found a number of deer carcasses in the woods that seem to have died near the end of the summer for some reason or other. I'm heading out to a different area this weekend to see what things are like there. And going to be rather selective of what, if any deer I take this year. Looking like next year we'll be limited to a single tag again, or worse. :(

^ there where plenty of deer in the MB interlake this year. saw more then my fair share and my hunting party filled our tags by the first day of gen rifle. but man where they spooked must be lost of "road hunting / night lighting" going on.

I'm hunting in the Interlake near Eriksdale. We saw only a couple deer all day and next to no tracks on four quarters of what is normally excellent deer hunting. Been going out since archery started with similar results. Also, only heard six shots all opening day which is virtually unheard of. And they were two flurries of three, likely from those road hunting pricks I see driving around real slow like.
Haven't seen a single scrape or rub yet either, we've usually seen dozens of each by this time.

My family has have a moose in the freezer and a 1/3 share in my uncles and my brother shot a nice buck so this year if I shot one it has to be a monster. So its shooting yotes and setting traps for me.

There are still some old mature deer around and you can't kill them if your sleeping in and watching tv. You have to put the time in.

I'll be out every day I get and have been since August and the goal is still the same this year as it has been the last few. Old mature deer.

Hey Tooner. Nice to meet you. I hunt in a small town of about 500 people and I have probably met all of those who hunt, and nobody is shooting small deer. If they they can't take a mature buck then they will take a doe for meat. I on the other hand will only shoot a mature buck. I do appreciate the effort put forth by some to save the herd and this year I will probably go back empty handed unless a big mature buck shows up and even then he would have to be a 160 class deer. If I wanted small deer , I would hunt in my province of Quebec.I have been practicing quality deer management for the last 15 years
