Hunting the roads in Manitoba

HUNTING THE ROADS AND ROAD ALLOWANCES IN MANITOBA

A word to the wise is sufficient. In this case, I'll use three.

DON'T DO IT

You can hunt the road allowances using a shotgun, but not rifles.

As most of us use at least a .22, then hunting gophers on the roads is not allowed.

I've been in Calgary for a year now and went gopher shooting for my first time this past Thursday. They were out in full force. Had so much fun I went back for a second helping on Saturday. Can't wait for the next outing. Sorry no pics, too busy shooting these little buggers.

is there anywhere a bit closer to BC to find alot of gophers?I want to bring Motorhome this weekend with a friend and gas is not cheep to go all the way to Sask:D

Got back last night from Mankota and that was some really awesome gopher shooting and many, many thanks to gopherxs for letting me shoot on his land.

I left Winnipeg Friday night, shot all day Saturday and on Sunday from 6:00am till noon before I needed to head back. The weather was great Saturday, sunny with light wind but it did get a little warm in the afternoon. Sunday was ok too but the wind started getting strong by lunch time.

There are soooooo many gophers out there, just pick the range you want to shoot at, 10ft to 400+ yards and start wacking them. I switched off between the 22lr for the close targets and the 223 for the longer shots. The pace can get rather quick, more suited for semi-autos rather than the bolt actions I was using, especially early and late in the day. And just when you think you're making a dent in the population, there's more. Anyway, here's a few pics from the trip.

The field with the 223 setup for some longer range work. The brown spot near the top left is 200yrds, the ridge behind goes to 380 at the furthest point.

The cleanup crew doesn't take long to move in

Longest measured shot (327 yrds), I only walked out there a few times, too much shooting to do! :)

A badger greeting party, there were 4 of them standng on the road when I first drove up.

All in all it was a great trip and it was very nice to meet gopherxs, his family and brother. Hopefully I can find some more time to make it out once more this year.

I also am in the Calgary area looking to get out shooting gophers. What area did you go to.

I know this thread is kind of old, but myself and a friend REALLY wanted to head out this weekend to do tons of Gopher shooting. We shoot 22's and have a full case of ammo ready to go. Anyone know of any area's that are good to shoot? Most of the farms I go to have crops now and its pretty much impossible to shoot there now, so any information on where to head or any farmer that needs help please let me know.

how do you dispose of the gopher bodies? got something you put a mark on for every kill? :D

Gophers are canibals, they will eat their own dead or wounded, the ones that they don't dispose of themselves get eaten by hawks, magpies, crows, coyotes etc.

Disposal?

The seagulls & crows will start munching on them the second they stop twitching that's if another gopher doesn't carry it away for a feed. Gopher carcasses don't last long.

Check your regs. Its says the use of a "centerfire" is prohibited, not rimfire.

new year new gophers

Although its only Feb 1 and we have still got mounds of snow, yesterday was +3degrees and guess what I saw? Right, a gopher running around on top of the snow just looking for 38 grains of hollowpoint lead. So I figured its time to resurrect this thead and see if anyone out there wants to start thinking about shooting a few of the little buggers. Time to start thinking about it as i've aready had a few PMs. I'm sure there will be a few left even after all the CGNs who were here last year.:)

i will be heading out to the MB/SK area around easter to help with a yote infestation problem...
but the pics in this thread make me think i will be heading east twice this year :D

I think I am up to 3500 rounds stockpiled for the spring. I got permission from the Mrs. to pick up a brick every payday to ease the burden come spring.

My brother in law was a student in Lethbridge for a few years, he told me a university professor had studied these critters for years. She was offended by the name gopher, preferring thier real name "Richardson Ground Squirrel". I found the info about their hibernation and active periods to be very interesting. Unfortunately it means the good season is much shorter than I thought.

If you ever contact her, be civil, she loves these animals, and while we may not understand that, we need to be good ambassadors of our sport.
