Just picked up a colt series 70, maybe had a box of shells through it. absolute mint shape. my dilemma being should i do a custom build or leave it in its pristine condition? the collector in me want to keep it mint but for some reason I can stop thinking about tricking it out wit ed brown parts, fitting the frame and slide etc

If I'm customizing a gun I usually pick a base gun that's not in mint condition just cause I never have the heart to mod a pristine collector. The other reason is cause I'm usually paying top dollar for a mint collector that I'm just gonna put a ton more money into if I'm customizing it when a low round count beater is gonna cost less and serve me just as well as a base gun.

Keep it mint. They arent making any more original series 70's and these are sought after by collectors, and kept in its original condition, its value will only go up.I have to disagree with the idea that customising a pistol increases its value,I dont think you will ever sell a customised gun and recoup your money put into customising it(unless its something like a swenson etc).Plus your ideas of custom features may not agree with others.I have seen quite a few customised 1911s on the EE sitting there for an awful long time

There are lots of factory guns out there now with all the custom features that you are probably looking for and quite frankly, the guns made today are superior than the older guns when it comes to fitting ,accuracy etc.

Besides a solid bushing and a set of Novak's what's it need? I suppose you could get it ported, but abi-safties, a long slide release and beaver tail don't belong. If you could find a set of nicely figured grips with a diamond around each screw, that would be classy though.

If it's a mint one, keep it original for sure.

They aren't making any more originals... ;)

I'd look for another 1911 to modify.

NAA.

Put that colt down! Walk away,go to your computer and order a norc for kitchen gun smithing dont mod the colt if you want to piss with something buy a $300 norc. Youre going to spend $300 + in parts plus only to devalue your colt $500+ so now your out $800 instead of the $300 for a norc and what ever you pay for parts and your colt is still worth $ and you have another gun.

If you're going to do a serious build, start with a new Colt, not an old one.

"Putting the old parts back" doesn't work because too much stuff gets modified to work with the new parts. The frame is altered to work with the new grip safety and so on.

Once you cut up the old gun, it's gone. And most people who do their own work on 1911s make them worse, not better.

Please don't - I agree with all the above. Work on a Norc, RIA, Sam, Springer, Ruger, Remington. 70 series Colts have much more value left stock IMO.

It's up to You. I wouldn't do that though.
Plenty of options out there and if You don't like your pistol the way it is - sell it and buy one that You like better.
Still, it's up to You. Just remember that after You will spend all the money on the changes and modernization...it's not going to be a better pistol.
