To Scope a 98k.

Ok so here's the deal.....

Im looking at getting a mauser 98k (german) and I would like to put a nice scope on it (ive caught the ww2 sniper bug) the scope would be WWII era prob repro cause money is an issue.

The questions are as followed: What is needed to actually "scope" the rifle? where to find the glass(scope) for it? the rings or mount? does it need a bent bolt? gun smithing? worthwhile? what are we lookng at for prices here? oh yeah im sure if its a rc doesnt really matter?

I did my PU mosin sniper last year and it was harder than expected. I'd suggest get some good practice drilling and tapping. Make sure your holes are centered, in the right spot, and strait. Learn about tapping if you don't already, make sure you can consistantly tap a good hole that's not crossthreaded, full of burrs, or angled. I almost buggered it up doing the first/last run right on my mosin. Turned out all right, but there were pucker moments.

The K98 doesn't need a bent bolt as far as I know, simply because it already has it, unless your scope is somehow really really big. A side mount would be easier in my mind, as I don't know if top mounts go all the way through the bridge and reciever ring (then how do you deal with burrs?) or if they're blind holes that need a special flat nosed tap for.

That's where I'd start at least. As far as I know, mounts are more expensive for k98's, and so are the guns themselves.

Glass, well just about anything with a gloss finish is probably acceptable :p Just my opinion. I've got a weaver k31 scope on my mauser that looks pretty appropriate.

Sorry, meant that finding one already done will be likely cheaper than gathering the rifle and parts and having the work done. Then again planning sometimes half the fun, I dunno.

First decide what you want to do.
A) Make it as original as possible.
B) Just put a any old scope on any old K98.

If A):
Then the type of scope mount depends on who made your K98 since the factories mostly had the mountings done.

German scopes of that time period for the most part did not left/right click adjustments, that was done from the mounts.
Turrets mounts used one piece rings, so the scopes have to be disassembled to fit into the rings.

There is a glut of these old scopes in germany right now that people want to sell off, problem is most of them come with commercial mountings for the break open single or double barreled sporting rifles.
 
I am going to be selling my K98 high turret repro sniper in the near future if you are interested. It has an original WW2 era Zeiss scope on it though so it might be a bit more than you are looking to spend. The mount is an Iron Elite high turret repro mount with split rings. With the turret rail I imagine it only replaces the standard graded rear sight and no drilling and taping required? Or do I have this wrong?
