That is the question.
I bought the M-14 with the purpose of it being an inexpensive semi-auto big game gun. So today I took it to Genesse for its first real test after Hungry's seminar in the Grove here in God's country (Alberta). Over the iron sights at 100 meters I was getting 4" 5 shot groups. To me thats a dead deer. :D
Do I bother with the Bassett mount and the expence of a decent scope?

Oh, and thats with the Norc sights and Norc op-rod spring guide.

Dammnit Hungry...i forgot to buy those lottery tickets you told me to get.

"when in doubt, scope your gun"

i'm quoting myself:D you should've added a poll, get a general idea, but everything is relative to what you want to do, if you feel fine hunting with iron sights to me that is perfectly legit! keep in mind m14 mounts are like optics, quality is not cheap.

Remember what Hungry said about cheap scope mounts? Good enough for minute of moose and thats it.To get good mounts ya gotta pay good dollars.

Lots of people have been having luck with the Bassett mount, but for me it was going to be a for sure thing. I bought a Smith 2024 at $200:eek: The M1A is REALLY hard on scopes. I would go for a ARMS 18 or Smith mount. Like stated before, you get what you pay for, IMHO.

Buy right or you buy twice...

I'd base the decision on how you like using iron sights under the conditions you hunt. For me, the best hunting conditions are typically at the low light of around sunrise and sunset, and I find a scope to be a great asset under those conditions. Also, I can hit a target better at 200 yards with a scope than without, plain and simple. Whether that's relevant or not, will also depend on where and how you hunt.

In my experience the Norinco sights suck ass, so I scrapped them and went with an A.R.M.s #18 solution. You can use variable power hunting type scopes or tactical hi viz types depending on your hunting situation.
I'd say do it. I did and never looked back

Yeah..I remember.
I guess I'll break down and get a Bassett.

I don't think you will ever see true accuracy of M14 without scope. And like Grizzlypeg mentioned already, in low light conditions scopes rule. And like Grizzlypeg said, the best hunting happens exactly around that time of the day.

I just picked up my Basset mount from the post office last monday (ordered Nov 11, got Dec 01). Looks great. Haven't mounted yet. Waiting for scope from Marlin (Falcon 4x14-44mm). Got the Rail version. Hope to have a range report soon.
