To SPUHR or not to SPUHR

I have a Vortex HD Gen 2 that I need mounts for and I had decided to use the SPUHR mount as my Rail is 0 MOA and I get the option of 20MOA with the spuhr mount and it's suppose to be top notch. I have read some reports of scopes sliding in the mounts and wrecking the finish. I see in there manual that your suppose to use rosin between the rings and scope. Some claim it's not necessary others say they needed it or the scope would slide under recoil. So whats the opinion of CGN members that run the mount.

I just SPHURred x 2 - just ordered 2 SPHUR mounts from Wolverine Supplies (CGN site sponsor). They confirmed that the mounts would be high enough for my specific scopes (S&B and Nightforce) and no rosin required.

I did some careful comparisons to other potential mount systems, and decided that this was the way to go - one-piece design, simple levelling system based on a wedge, and clever 45 degree rings leaving better access to the turrets.

Buy once, cry once. I've seen too many nice rifles with expensive optics sitting in cheap rings, which were probably an accuracy-limiting factor...

Had a SPUHR to see what the fuss was about, Went back to ATRS rings. ;)

They are cool for sure, but a crate of ammo and trigger time is cooler

me too... Too much $$$ for what you get. I like ATRS rings now too, so much so that I got them on all my rifles. Holding tangent theta's to sightrons.

I've never SPUHR'd, but I've Alpha-mounted x2 and they're good. Likely unnecessary though, when compared to the simplicity and weight saving of ATRS rings....

I've got 650 rounds through my 6 Creedmoor (Stiller Tac 30 in McMillan A5) with a Bushnell XRS mounted in the Spuhr rings, just over a year of shooting (load dev, practice, PR matches, PRS style matches and a PRS match) through all conditions. I didn't use the Spuhr ISMS because I wanted to get as low as possible.

I didn't use rosin and there's been no movement at all, although not much recoil in my setup. Repeatable zero if you use a torque driver. Beautiful machining and finish with a lot of mounting options for accessories like a cosine indicator, red dot mount, etc. They look really cool as well if that's important to you. There are index marks on the rings, not sure if this is the case with the mounts, which come in handy for positional shooting. This is truly top notch stuff but you would expect it with the price.

Only drawback with the rings I found is that I ran out of room on my rail to move the scope forward, so I have an extended rail on order. The level is a bit small, but the fact that it's built in and the kit comes with a leveling tool kind of makes up for it, as setup is a lot quicker and less of a pain. If you are far sighted, you may have trouble seeing the Spuhr level and may be better off with another system and running a scope mounted level further up the scope tube.

I use or have used Nightforce rings, ADM mounts, and 3 of my shooting buddies run Badger rings and LaRue mounts. I think that any quality ring set or mount will do just fine, but add the cost of a good level in and you are pretty near the cost of the Spuhrs.

Talk to Richard Near @ NEAR MANUFACTURING , great mounts and rails . Canadian small buisness too !

I switch it between a few guns with my best scope ( justification)

This. I'm running Badger Max 50 rings and an Accuracy 1st level and the cost if purchased new is maybe $50 less than the Spuhrs. I was humming and hawing about which direction to go in and then found some used Badgers on the EE for a good deal. You really can't go wrong either way.

Guys the OP has a zero moa rail so I don't see how rings are going to help him. A one piece base with built in cant would be the best option. SPUHR is nice for sure but for 250 bucks an AI 34mm mount is also a decent option (comes in 20,28,45 moa). Mine has been on my rifle for well over 2600 rounds (I got tired of recording it) and has never moved. It is not the fanciest mount out there but it works. I run an Accuracy First level with it and like the setup alot.
