Well I finally had a chance to do what many others do, hook up with Bartell
Got up at quarter to 4, on the highway by 4am, in Bartell's driveway by 5:10. We were on the dirt road by 5:30 as his buddy was a few minutes late.
Get to field, jaw a bit, start setting up the dekes. Guys go park trucks, settle in behind the row of oats that would be our blind.
What, buddy, like 5 minutes in, "DUCKS coming right down the middle get ready!"
About 10 mallards came right at us, and the blasting began!! KABOOM! Missed my first one, flockshot! s**t! Pick one! KABOOM! Duck down! KABOOM! Duck wavers but keeps going (long range shot). We downed three in the first set.
Next bunch in is 5 big ganders, committed perfectly to the dekes and the 4 of us lit the sky up like the 1st of July. KABOOM BOOM BOOM KABOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM
Hammered 4 of 5
After that, a few more flocks of ducks and the odd few committed geese, but they were flying in large flocks, and not fully committing to the dekes. The ducks were a blast, making 3 to 4 close passes before we could get shots off
Frickin awesome morning! Look for more next weekend
Here's Bartell with his first of the morning that almost decapitated me as it went flying past my head into the creek
Me with 2 of the first 3
3 of the first 4 geese
Couple more ducks
The day's result. 9 mallards and 8 geese
And since this is GUNNUTZ, can't leave out the weaponry info. Bartell was shooting a Benelli Nova 3 1/2" and mostly BB steel I think. I was shooting my old man's Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga 2 3/4" #2 steel.
