Toilet Paper Filler/wads?

I was sorking on a 44 American load last year and was not yet pleased with the results...I was still getting a few grains of unburnt powder in the case.

A few folks suggested stucking a little square of toilet paper over the powder to hold the powder against the primer. Then ive been reading about this chamber ringing thing with wads in straight walled cases...

Who's using tp wads out there? any issues with ringin? too much pressure?
 
Some good articles lately on wads and fillers - Double Gun Journal for one.
Main concern seemed to be with hard wads that did not fill the case.
Seems they move forward when the powder goes off, but then when they hit the base of the bullet, a sharp chamber pressure spike is created before the bullet gets moving.
A wad that fills the case (Kapok or similar) does not seem to cause the problem. I use real cotton wadding in a Martini Henry (black powder) and have not had a problem.
Any wadding can be a potential grass or bush fire hazard tho,
 
I just loaded up a dozen test loads this morning. I was hoping that the TP wad would help with the unburned powder.

I'm wondering if I should pull them apart and take the tissue out.
 
I've been using TP filler for years. As mentioned above there is a fantastic article on fillers in the summer issue of the Double Gun Journal. The entire article is posted here ht*****tp://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/760101804/m/3971092851 . It is about the tenth or twelfth post down.
 
Something that makes good wadding and doesn't burn is hornet or wasp's nest. Just make sure the bugs have vacated before harvesting:p It's worked fine for me with M/L's

TP is not the most elegant solution but it works just fine. I don't think you will even come close to having ringing issues with relatively lower pistol round pressures. Most of the stuff I have heard about involved much higher pressure rifle rounds. That said I typically do use TP with my 50/70 rolling block and depending on powder selection large cased pistol cases and do not have such concerns. In my opinion if you load to reasonable blackpower equivalant velocities I really don't see it happening.

Apu does have a point, I am loading reduced loads for and it seems the ringing issues are with cartridges that are loaded way hotter than what I play with.

Hopefully I can get out to the range this week and try them out.

Great results using 1/4 sheet of TP in 41 Swiss with SR4759.
WARNING ! Reduce loads and work up as it bumps up velocity due to better powder burn. In my instance 19.5g with TP gave same velocity as 21.0 without.
Without TP there was a much greater standard deviation in velocity and a lot of unburnt powder in the barrel.

That's what I sas thinking. With the powder held nicely in place it would give a better burn in all respects. Cleaner, and a bit faster. I'm using 12.5 grains of IMR4227 (and some 4759 loads too) in the 44Russian and 44 Merwin but finding it a bit dirty and a few unburned grains.

I was about to try doing something with 2400 and have still been debaiting trailboss but I had a fellow shooter suggest that TP wads to hold the powder in place would give a more efficiant burn.

I just need to get some range time in...

Ok, finally got out to try these things out.

12.5 grains IMR 4227 pushing a 220 grain heeled bullet, one sheet of TP folded into a strip about 1" wide and cut into squares. I put one of these squares over the powder and seated the bullet.

Shooting from a Merwin Hulbert Pocket Army 3.5" barrel, bright shiny bore, excellent rifling.

Out at the range I got a puff of shredded toilet paper in my face 6 out of six shots. I did get more pressure loading with the TP as the case was sealing better in the chamber (I was getting a little soot on the outside of the case without TP and the empties dropped right out).

...And I was getting a good clean burn inside the case - no powder left over and nice and clean looking inside.

...but, I had a pile of unburned powder in the barrel.

Seems like the TP bumped the pressure up a bit but just moved the unburned powder from inside the case to the barrel.

I guess its time to try something faster. Anyone got an oz of 2400 they want to pass on for some experimentation ;)
