More often than not my strutter has a lay down hen within inches Couple or four feeders. Jake tail ,real feathers, I find, is key and the 2.-3year olds don't seem to mind as often they come in before their bigger running mates.
I have been trying a new decoy that has been getting interesting results, a skinny(and i do mean skinny) jake alone or with hens. I have had turkeys come to decoys every which way but this one just seems to get their interest in a different way. Once interested they are very hesitant but their curiosity of this odd bird just seems to lock them up and make them come. In combo with the strutter and hens it gives less dominant visitors someone to vent on or try and steal a hen.
Whoever started this thread has started me thinking and taking the dogs for a walk yesterday low and behold a flock of thirty or so down the bush a ways. Now if I can get a wack at the one across the road I have been after for the last 3 years he should be a good one.
He lives in a rabbit warren, comes out to open ground rarely, seems to know when I cut my last tag as he will appear to strut out my front window. Hunted him for a week straight in last springs late season heat wave, used every trick I had and got close twice. Second last day of the season went to another location due to a flat ATV tire, cut my last tag, cause it was so bloody hot and humid, cleaning the bird look across the road and there he is strutting in the open field for more than an hour and he did it the same time/duration next 2 days.
My wife laughing her butt off and insinuating that damn bird is smarter than me. The nerve.
