I went and bought a set of Lee molds for my 9mm and a 10lb Lee pot but could not get any handles for the molds so I decided to build my own. They started out life as a pair of old style tin snips. I cut and drilled some flat bar to fit into the groves on the mold, clamped it all in place and welded it up with the TIG, did some cosmetic corner rounding and voila! I fired up the pot, melted a few ingots and cast up my first ever batch of bullets. I did take me quite a few batches to get the mold temperature figured out but once I got it, all went pretty good. Now I can at least play around while I wait for a set of Lee handles to arrive.

Good job OU725 What was it that necessity was the mother of? Which 9 mm do you have and what style of bullet did you cast? I have a CZ75 and have a NOE .358 121 gr Round Nose plain base mold on the way. I'm hoping the tight CZ chamber will like the round nose. It is satisfying to produce your own projectiles.

Haha, well done sir!

How hot do the handles get? If your looking for handles Titan reloading usually has the lee ones in stock, site sponsors might have some too.

Also if you have a hot plate (if it's the coil type put an old saw blade or plate of metal on it) to pre heat your molds ingot's if there is enough space.

I cast the 356-125-2R I believe. The handles get a little warm but nothing you can feel through a light welding glove. I have seen the handles on site sponsors and will get a set ordered. I am not a real patient type and have access to welders, and a lathe so I tend to get tinkering a lot.

better wear glove, i got a buckshot mold with full metal handle covered with 1/2inch thick wood, and its very hot even with leather gloves.

the sharpshooter one? i wondered how well they handled heat.

i use $10 princess auto leather welding gloves for casting and hand breaking sprue's, not stick beating for my molds!
