I have been having discussions with some friends about certain handguns that were of such quality that they became uneconomical for the companies to make. That being that the cost of producing these high quality guns priced them out of the market. What started this conversation was the move away from the 3rd Generation Smith and Wesson pistols to the current polymer frames.

The examples currently being discussed are

1. 3rd Gen Smith and Wesson

2. Detonics

3. Dornaus and Dixon (Bren Ten)

Can you folks give us some others that come to mind.

Automag priced the guns too low. The original company went out of business as a result. I know I'll be corrected here by people with a more accurate account. There were resurrections and indeed there is another one currently happening.

H&K P7 I'd say.

SIG P230 and the Steyr GB, too.

I'm not sure the Bren Ten was discontinued due to costs...I'd always thought it was more due to poor business decisions and poor QC.

Mauser C96? Sure it's a bit outdated but nobody has really ever done a full fledged replica as it's awfully complex vs most modern handguns. Just the amount of parts and time to assemble alone make it impractical to do a modern repro even though the market is there

Yes! The C96 for sure. I had a brain fart and forgot to include it on my list.

Uneconomical is a matter of scale and market. Korth revolvers and boutique 1911s are hardly bargain propositions, but the size of their operations and the target market's ability to bear make them worthwhile. Guns like the Luger, P7, and Python were made by large manufacturing houses that live or die by government contracts and their requirements, and price reigns supreme in that domain. Especially so in an increasingly peaceful era where large defense budgets are hard to justify.

Colt Python +1
Always my dream revolver and still a dream revolver.

Luger .45ACP

Oh... and not that expesive to make:
Genuine USA made Winchester M70, and their 10Ga wood stock, silver receiver semi-auto shotgun.
Always an ICON to have.
