Hey guys...cheek pads: where does a fella buy one of those good leather lace-up jobs?

Here is the problem I'm having: my rifle/scope are set up fine for offhand shooting but when I sit down and sling up I just can't seem to get my eye 'into the scope'. It's the damndest thing - I had an old Ruger No.1 varminter and it didn't matter whether I was standing, sitting or prone...I could always get my cheek on that stock and line myself up to shoot. With my new Rem I go into the sitting position and fidget and fart around and I just can't line up without a major struggle...and when I finally DO get lined up I am hunched right up so bad that I can't relax properly for the shot! It's like trying to fit into clothes that are too small!

Will a cheek pad help in a situation like that do ya think? I originally wanted a tactical style stock but the boys are saying those are made for guys that shoot pretty much prone all the time.

Your two bits, as always, is sincerely appreciated!

I doubt a cheek piece would help much, especially a non adjustable one. Its the ergos of your stock unfortunately but what dem guys didn't tell you is there are plenty of tactical stocks designed to compliment any shooting position. Some are dedicated prone like the B&C Medalist tactical while the M40 stock is designed to work in all shooting positions. Of course that means you're going to compromise a little fit and comfort in each position but that's the only way to cover all your bases without a complicated array of adjustments. Your Ruger stock fits that category. There are options, which model of Remington do you have?

Here’s the thing with stock design…. Stocks are designed for a particular shooting position, for the most part. If you look over the classic Rem 700 bdl you will see the top of the butt plate is well below the line of bore. The idea is that stock is designed for the standing position where your shoulder is also well below the line of bore. It's also quite awkward prone.

When you examine what I think you mean when you think of tactical stocks, is really a prone stock. What you will notice about a prone stock is the top of the butt plate is positioned higher in relation to the line of bore. That’s because your shoulder is too when you are lying belly down.

Then of course there are some stocks that are adjustable. If a stock has a vertically adjustable butt and a vertically adjustable cheek, it can be adjusted well to both prone or standing. OR, you can adjust it to be a reasonable compromise for both.

I suspect the Ruger stock was set up in a good compromise to suit your physique.

Some stocks also have an adjustable length of pull too - where the butt plate moves forward or back, that's because LOP also changes a little and is shorter when standing than it is when prone.

You just gotta do whatever it takes to make the stock fit you. Some guys use the insulator foam for indoor plumbing. It is basically a foam tube with about 1/2 inch wall and a long axis slit. Just take a piece or two and duct tape it to your stock until you naturally line up with the scope.

The tape might be ugly but you need to ask yourself… Do you want to look good and loose or look bad and win.
