Hi,
Today i read in the calgary herald section b2 that around the calgary area that farmers were going to use pesticides on their land for gophers. Because there is so many gophers the farmers dont have enough guns or people to shoot the gopher's. So i was wondering if us at gunnutz could get together a group to go slay the gopher's.

Your gopher shooting doesn't need to be a "group" thing. Go knock on some doors, get to know the landowners, and most will be glad to have you shoot once you've introduced yourself and they know you'll act responsibly on their property. Just common sense. I do not let random groups of unknown shooters on my land, but I do allow those who I know and trust. I suspect Calgary landowners are no different. Most ranchers that I know would rather have gophers shot than resort to poison, but mature, responsible shooters are a key part of the solution.

Myself and a couple of responsible friends were looking to drive out from Vancouver to Alberta (nowhere in particular) to help take care of these gophers. As I can't just knock on doors as I don't know the area, would anyone who knows of a rancher with this problem mind dropping me a line to see if we could work out an agreement?

Thanks

the reason that they're going to use poison is that the mds surrounding calgary have a no shooting ban-so our "traditional" method of population control won't work- too many yuppies- and it's been that way for years-as far as there not being enough guns, the herald is a liberal newspaper and is full of misinformation, and blatantely anti-gun

It's funny, I have a friend from Cgy who is totally against shooting gophers, saying that "there being shot to near extinction" I laughed and asked him for some of what he's smoking. Silly boy!!

I've often thought a "pest forum" for Canada would be a great idea. Farmer posts a message that he needs help, hunters respond with where, when and how often. Internet makes hunting and invitations easy.

Canadapestnetwork.com is available: http://www.whois.net/dnr/index.php?d=Canadapestnetwork&tld=com

It would need much Phb programming, just by province, and a "looking for hunters" and a "Looking for places to hunt"

If someone wants to host it, I'd even offer to build the site....

Think of it as hunting personal ads.

i loathe yuppies that move out of the city, buy a swatch of farmland to build their city-style dream home on, then start #####ing campaigns against their new rural neighbors for their traditional and necessary practices like controlling groundhog populations.

morons. 'but theyre so cute', and actually feeding them. ugh. the farmers surrounding these people should just fence them in with fences that go 20 feet underground, then chuck all the groundhogs over onto their property... see how they like them then.

ACTUALLY,there was a movement again by the herald, to put the RICHARDSON GROUND SQUIRREL on the ENDANGERED LIST last summer- that's the yuppie name for the 'gophers"- it was dropped when sask land owners started advertising for hunters

LOL

i still dont understand why chipmunks are 'specially protected animals'. i guess the reasoning is that 'theyre cute, and we cant shoot cute things even if all they really are is striped rats'. anyone that lives outside of the city knows all too well just how common they are, and anyone that owns several bird feeders knows how fast they breed when near a plentiful food source.

now groundhogs. my god, theres no hope for this country :jerkit:

some of this animal protection BS is getting out of hand - look at the black bear issues after the cancellation of the spring bear hunt.

Last year we had a lot of trouble getting people to let us shoot gphpers on their land.. There is a considerable "yuppie zone" aroud calgary of approx. 45 minutes...

Put an ad in your local paper describing your interest in helping farmers.
Then buy a day planner and several bricks of .22 ammo.

Also find a use for the Gopher fur and meat...there must be a market for it.

I'm sure Farmers will get in touch with you.

Also don't forget to clean up after yourself...brass casings etc.

as a side note, i think there's some foundation in the old song greasy grimy gopher guts- my grandfather used to tell stories of places he'd have to stay in sask ( farms and so forth) where they served gopher meat for supper- as for the hides, they're squirrels

the "yuppie" zone that is tired of guys showing up with SKSs and FMJ ammo and bouncing bullets into stock waterers, outbuildings, fence posts etc.
or driving down the gravel roads and "helping out" by shooting at the gophers they see (note i said shooting at)

almost all of my access is within 45 minutes of town (some places i have been shooting for 20 plus years, i was even allowed to shoot at Spruce Meadows before the city encroached) and EVERY landowner i have permission with has horror stories of "shooters" making a mess of some thing or another

sorry but the just drive around, ask and you will be welcomed with open arms may not work anymore

help with branding/fencing/harvest/calving etc and may be earn the privilege of shooting.....

not to mention the "holed" road signs and missing insulators esp south and west of the city
