Well, I just traded my last shorty M14, and took a LONGY M14 as part trade.

Now I've got THREE long 14s, and no short 14s. Time for another run over to see Joe Dlask, and have him CUT me up some more shorties. Joe just told me yesterday that his move is almost over, and he is taking some work in again.

Joe tells me he now has a jig, so he can now cut, crown and turn the muzzle thread on M14s, WITHOUT TAKING THE BARRELS OUT OF THE RECEIVERS.

So for all you rare and lucky people out there who have a perfectly indexed M14 [ all three of you ] if you want a shorty, now you don't have to mess with taking off the barrel any more. The rest of us will still have to pull the barrels to reindex anyhow.
Bah Humbug!!!

So just out of curiousity ...
what is the ratio of Shorty M14s to Long M14s?

It seems to me that about 1/3 of the M14 seminar attendees I see want a shorty. How does that number sound? I know that personally, the shorties just balance so much better for me for practical use, that every M14 I get, no matter how accurate, eventually ends up being introduced to Mr Chop Saw, to get "neutered".

Is there a market for a NEW prebuilt, production line shorty, based on the new Polytech rifles??

What would be the most popular set up regarding front sight, muzzle accessory, stock, etc??

How much should such a shortened beast cost, over and above the price of a NEW Poly 14?

I am getting tired of doing these conversions one at a time ...
maybe I should buy up a bunch of these new Polys, and neuter them in batches??

Enquiring minds want to know ...

As long as they do not go shorter than 18.75" (someone correct if I am wrong please) it will stay in the non-restricted realm.

But if you get too short, the muzzle blast would be pretty crazy I would imagine. 18,75" is a nice size and a good compromise.

M14 Doctor/45ACPKING I think charged $80 for a cut and threading.

I have a shorty and it did everything my longy did... It was a hard decision, but I eventually sold my longy :(

18.5 is the shortest.

Cutting to 18.75 is to allow the safe buffer for threading, crowning and finishing.

we're getting our new batch of Norcs here in NZ with the synthetic stocks.. and they are coming in both full length and shorty from the factory .. and suprisingly for us, at a reasonable price aswell
$700 shipped for a shorty, for you guys that would be probably a shade over $400

ours are shortened to 18" though, which could be why you dont seem to get them there, that would make them restricted wouldnt it ?

FENIX,
VERrrrrrry interesting info about NZ and the pre-built shorties.
Any pictures of how they have done up the front sight and flash hiders?
Thanks

ill have my one tomorrow so i can get some more detailed shots but if you jump onto

www .guns.co.nz

theres is a pic of one of the camo shortys on the main page, click on that and you'll get a good sized image so you can see it up close.
and i know the camo looks horrble in the pictures.. but in person it actually grows on you.

the unit i handled yesterday didn't appear to have the flash hider welded on.. i didnt notice any spot welds, but as we all know, they are more obvious on some rifles than on others

further to my other post, i dont know if they have changed the twist rate for the shortys ( or whether they are just cut down and re-machined barrells that got mucked up the first time round ) but the one i played with on the weekend was pretty accurate.

It looks like they kept the same set-up in the front,
but put it on a shorter barrel.

alright.. so i got home tonight and started to work on the new M14 factory shorty..

packed in the same packaging as the normal m14s , but was forced to fit as there was no cut out for the front sight for the shorty

Hugh the dog came to help unpack it

they've done away with the OD slings, they are now a pretty solid green.. kinda heinous but its not as if i was going to use it anyway

im assuming like most of the 2009's they didnt come in cosmo, just this brown oil.
which makes things better on the degreasing front
DSC00310.jpg

Voltron came along to lend a paw with removing the oil

the FH is still welded on so taking the gas system apart to degrese was a little bit of a mission ..

also came with a new manual ( ive never seen this one with any of my other norcs ) and it was pretty comprehensive.. favourite line "the m14 was designed to be shot right handed, thats the way uncle sam wanted it and thats the way its supposed to be"
this must be norinco's stab at all you southpaws out there , as it was right at the start of the "NOTE TO LEFT HANDED SHOOTERS" section lol

partly re assebled, just airing it out after a good wash down with 91 octane
DSC00312.jpg

tonight ill give it a good wipe down and swab, then oil and grease it properly, and chuck up a few more images.
the bloody thing is just like all my other norcs though, the 5 round mags are next to impossible to extract

as an afterthought.. the rear sight, adjusts elevation very nicely, windage though i cant budge with my paws alone, might have to get the screwing drive out
