i have: a bushnell 3-9x40 that i haven't mounted yet.

i have: a scrawny little .22 that wants a scope (it's a marlin 980 if that matters)

i have: a debilitating lack of knowledge about, well... everything firearms related, so excuse the stupidity of some of my questions, am trying to learn as i go along.

shouldn't be a problem, but you'll need rings to fit that- they're DOVETAIL rather than standard 1 inch-and the parallax will probably be off

I was running a millett 6-25x56 on my Savage a few years back!! The paralax might be a bit off, meh. Have fun.

to much as in the range of the scope is waaaaaaaay past what a .22 will do.... then yes

that being said if its what u have and it works for you,, then you can never have too much scope :D

not too much scope at all.

I have Leapold 8.5x25 with 30mm tubes on three of my 22's.
People tell me that This is too much scope but I hit what I shoot at
Which is all that counts in my book.

The scope is more than adequate for the .22. I have a Marlin 990L semi, tube fed and it is home to a Bushnell 3x9x40 scope. makes even some long shots seem easy.

So you can fit it to your .22 and just use the adequate part of its capability. If you find it's too much trouble to fit or you do fit it and just don't like it, perhaps because of the parallax setting, you can sell it or trade it to get a rimfire scope. A 4x20 rimfire Tasco can be had from Wal-Mart or C.Tire for around $20. On my .22 I have a 4x32 Bushnell rimfire scope that cost about $50 new and it's very appropriate.

For target shooting it is a little short on power. I like two or three times that. Your big issue though is going to be parallax. Centerfire scopes typically have the parallax set to zero at 100 yards. When shooting at 50 or 25 you are going to see parallax. It can be reset, if you want to go to that trouble. See this procedure:
