Have you done your good deed for the day?
Took a new shooter out for his first time today. He's about 20 and a new co-worker. He's heard me talking about my time hunting and shooting and always sounded interested.
So, after three days of rain here in Southern Saskatchewan, the sun finally showed up and I said to myself, "Self, lets go find some gophers!" As I'm loading the truck I decide to give this young man a call and he says you bet.
We get to a local farm that I know and I go over safety with him, how to handle the rifle for loading and unloading, using the scope, finger off the trigger, safe carrying... you know. I have a target stand made out of a 2x4 and a piece of plywood that I take out all the time just in case I need to sight in and he does pretty good for his first time... and out we go.
It was great to see his eyes light up when he pulled the trigger for the first time. Mind you it was only a .22 but there's nothing like that first pop. Remember when you were a kid?
It was funny the first couple shots to see him hitting 20 yards infront of the 75 yard shot with the .22 but then I explained bullet drop and he caught on.
It took him a couple hours to get his first hit but he was pleased as punch when he got it.
All and all... a good day in the field. Just had to share his first "hunting" experience... and we're calling it hunting because we had to walk around so it counts.
It just got me thinking.... do you remember you're first hunt?
Mine was for rabbits with my uncle when I was about 10. I was using a little .410 shotgun and had so much fun tromping around in the snow looking for the little rockets with fur.
