Took S&W 17 to the range today.

I finally got my .22 out to the range today. And after about 50-60 rounds, the cylinder was getting sticky and hard to swing out. I gave the gun a complet tear down and clean last night and everything was as it should be. After about 400 rounds, I had ro bang it with my palm to get it to swing. Any sugestions?
 
I'd clean it well and then check the cylinder gap, IIRC it should be in the 0.003" - 0.007" range.

Check with the more knowledgeable revolver guys here for the proper spec gap.
 
Dirty 22 ammo will do that to a revolver.

The cylinder gap gets crud built up causing the cylinder to bind.

Did it seem harder to ####?

Typically I tend to stick to the cleaner(I know...) 22 ammo, and even at that I keep a cleaning brush(toothbrush works) to give the cylinder face, and forcing cone a good scrub every few cylinders of firing.
 
My 17-3 has pretty tight chambers and extraction can get sticky after a bunch of rounds. However I never have problems with cylinder rotation nor releasing the cylinder from the frame, no matter how dirty I let her get.
 
Check to see that the ejector rod is still tight. If it loosens up even a
bit, the cylinder becomes difficult to open/close.

exactly the same here.......400 rounds of .22 without cleaning IS a lot tho.
 
If the cylinder is difficult to open, it is probably the ejector rod unscrewing.

S&W .22 revolvers tend to have difficult extraction with dirty chambers to varying degrees. I have found with my pre-Model 17 K-22 that this can be minimized with plated bullets. When buildup is enough to cause hard extraction, I clean the chambers with a brush wrapped in #0000 steel wool. Some people have reported success with reaming the chambers, but I would hesitate to do so if it can be easily avoided.
 
Well I took it apart and had a good look. Crud built up on top side of frame above barrel, ejector rod becoming loose and face of barrel and cylinder layered in crud. Yeah, now I see why! Guess I should stop once and a while for a quick clean. Thanks for the advice.

I just keep in the habit of hand checking them but some low strength thread locker is probably a good idea!
