Took a co-worker of mine (this summers shooting buddy whom I introduced to shooting back in July, just need him to get out and get his own PAL now ;) ) out shooting today, and his "kid" brother (who has never shot a gun before).

I took 6 guns with me.

SR-22
10/22 Marauder (to start the noob on :D )

870 Tactical Shotgun (just so they could say, "I shot a shotgun!")
R700 "sniper rifle" (one of my coworkers favorites of the summer)

And finally,
1916 Spanish Mauser in .308
91/30 Mosin Sniper (that just showed up in the mail the morning before)

I got them shooting the .22's first then on to the shotty, and the "sniper rifle", then to introduce the younger one to "kick" we pulled out the Mauser.

"it kicks hard" is what he told me.... :rolleyes: "But I like it!" :cheers:

After that I loaded up my Mosin, and went to work sighting it in. Once it was on at 75m, it was still great out to 150 (was admittedly a little high at 75m). It also turned my steel target into swiss cheese :eek: ! But it sure was fun :D

Once they had a go at each gun, I asked them what they wanted to shoot more of... of all the "purty" guns I had to offer, they kept going back to the Milsurps! There is hope for our young ones yet!

Looks awfully much like two new converts to me.

Glad everyone had a good time.

If every shooter did this twice a year, we would triple our numbers each and every year.

Once that had been accomplished, Wendy would be where she belongs: on Welfare.

I got one of my co workers addicted last year. Another on the wait list.
I'm a total milsurp whore and only 27, so there are some sensible young(ish) people out there.
 
How do you like your mosin sniper ? Ive been wanting one for a while now, then I could run around in the forest and hunt pretending to be vassily zietsev :D

Usually, I just grab my keys, and open the safe and there it is! Laugh2 cou:


Seriously now, with the turret system, I considered it to be a pain to set, HOWEVER, since I am new to sighting in scopes (did one Vortex Crossfire one a few months ago) I used considerably LESS ammo on the mosin, only took about 18 shots to have it at a hunting level zero. This is because there isn't really a click system. The elevation is based on meters based on surplus ammunition balistics (if I read correctly) allowing the Russian sniper to accurately guess the range and put it on target quickly.

The reticle is also odd, not the shape (love the 3 pins shape) but how it moves in the glass. I was not expecting that. Made a rough image of what I mean.

With all of that said. I love this rifle. Once its zeroed, you feel like you can hit anything. I had it sighted at 75m with 180g MFS ammo, then I turned to my 100m paper target, and making 3inch groups (if I was doing my part), then turned over to my 150m "gong" (just some scrap steel that my .223 would only slightly indent). first shot made a beautiful ring, but then my target went flying back 5 feet to the ground... We made safe and went to investigate, clean through about 1.5 inches high and .5 inch to the right of where I was aiming.

I hope to harvest a beautiful buck with this rifle in a couple weeks, will be my first deer WITH my own rifle, and a fancy milsurp to boot! :D
 
Haha good one, well it sounds like a good investment. A few of us just went in on a crate of mosins. So i have my first mosin now and love it. Havent got a chance to shoot it yet but i cant wait. Ill hve to pick one of these up some day.

As do I, I way prefer older milsurps to plastic. And im 23

my sks will never get a different stock then the one it came with haha.

looks like they had a good time, i take friends and family out from time to time.

introducing younger people to "kick" is always fun haha

Not to be a #### but a Mosin can do MUCH better then 3" at 100 yards...I can do just under 2" with irons
 
I agree that milsurps are great. everything that I own, except my shotgun is a milsurp. They were designed to be rugged and easy to use, as such, there is not a lot that you can do to make them not work.

A friend, and I have gotten a friends children hooked. They are all 12 and younger. Usually when we go out to their place, we take a .22 and we let them plink away (under one of our direct suppervision). The stipulation is that they have to load there own magazines. The scary thing is, there have been days when one of them has out shot us.

Yes I realize that, but I am no "pro" shooter. Also, my scope could be fine tuned even more I am sure, but since I was just quickly sighting in so that I could drop a deer at 150m away. Only reason I was going quickly was so the other guys could continue shooting.

Major Sights - You have in one day done more for the shooting sports in Canada than all the 'from my cold, dead fingers' drama queen rants in history. Good job.
