Took the 45-70 to the range.

Hi guys,

Well, just got my Marlin 1895 45-70 yesterday and went to shoot her today. She have the 22" barrel with the microgroove and straight grip. Nice rifle :D .

I had a box of winchester 300gr and a box of 405gr.

The 300gr grouped just under 2" at 50yds, open sight and the 405gr about the same. :cool:

Then at 100yds... :eek: :eek: :eek: gees, I am so used to have a scope on my rifles that it was difficult to group under 6-7" at 100yds. The truth is that I could hardly see the target at that distance so the rifle is probably capable of way better grouping then I did.
I will definately have to scope her with a fixed 4x40 that is laying around in my shop.

Recoil... hell, it kicks like a mule with the 405gr, especially with that thin hard recoil pad.. (will need to fix that also). I limited my shooting to 30rnds and it was enough for the first day.

It looks like the factory ammo might be a bit slow, because, well maybe it's just me and it's normal but I am not used to hear the bullet hit the target after the shot.

I am used to shoot faster bullets that hits the target without hearing the impact, no delai, even with my 12ga with slugs, I didn't hear the slug hit the target so...:confused: ... different for sure..

I like your style PaulT I have the same. :) They're on the rarer side. And ya, you don't want to spend a whole lot of time on the bench with these things and their hard but pads :D Is yours a leather but "pad"?

I thought she had the leather pad but it's the "plastic/polymer" one. Hard as a rock :eek: .

How does yours handle? Do you shoot reloads or commercial ammo?

My rifle handles just dandy PaulT. I've done a bit of reloading for it with some cast bullets that had issues in my rifle :rolleyes: and today just bought 350gr Hornady, 300gr Partition and some 405Speer cast to try out. :) I've shot a few types of factory ammo as well and it is more accurate than I can shoot with iron sights it appears....:cool:

congrats on the new gun...i know you're gonna love it!!:cool: .......do you know what the eye relief is with that scope?.....if ya start ramping up that big bore--it's nice not hitting the eye brows!!:p .....enjoy!....larry
 
You think that those factory 405gr "trapdoor" loads kick? You are in for a treat then, friend. Just load some 350gr Hornadys over 52.0gr of Reloder 7 ;) and try them with a factory pad :D Or if you really wanna have fun, locate some 420gr hardcast and try a casefull of IMR 3031 or Reloder 7. You'll soon see that the factory loads are pussycats and pale by comparison. The .45-70 is one heck of a lot of fun to shoot in the levers :) For fun, load some 405gr bullets with just enough IMR 3031 to get about 1000fps and try some long range shooting. It's a gas to shoot and then wait to hear the bullet impact way out there :D Have fun and enjoy your new toy...KF
 
AS BC said, I've got some loads that do 1860 fps with a 500 gr hardcast out of my guide gun. wanna talk about recoil? 6.75 lb gun, and alot of thump on the shoulder...
My guide gun with factory 300's kicks like my 243, hardly atall, and the 405's are no different. I had a few girls to the range a few years ago, and all preferred shooting the guide gun to my abolt in 243... Second wind, and Gunnut were there for that day...

Yah, agreed, I will need to verify that, I don't want to have a permanent tatoo on my forehead. I saw what it can do on a friends eyebrow who was all proud to show his 350RemMag. After the shot, we all passed on trying his gun.....:eek: .

At the range, I've shot my Marlin after readjusting my scope on the 308, maybe I should of started with the 45-70, with a "fresh shoulder" and recoil probably would of felt not as bad. I'll do that next time..;)

I had the urge for many years to acquire a 45-70. When the right time and place happened, I came up with a 458 american. (close enough for me)
Unlike yous guys I have it in an K98 FN mauser, been sporterized, boyds laminate stock ,and after wrecking the original walnut stock, had a mercury recoil reducer installed as well. I use 45-70 load data=Ruger #1 and #3's=Siamese Mauser.
Williams peep rear sight and front blade. This is truly an accurate boomer and tons of fun to shoot. I do keep my range sessions to usually 10-15 rounds, or accuracy does suffer, due to shooter fatigue.
I know, I know, its just my comfort level......
I have no plan to scope it, nor do I desire to so. On a good day I get 1 1/2 to 2 inch groups at 100 yards.
