It's not a sniper rifle, but, its sure fun to fire. My brother and I were mashing the gong @ approx 200 yards away with ease after sighting it in.

I think I will bring it hunting this year with my express and .303

Can't wait to get the fire sights for it. I'm sure there will be much improved sighting of the targets.

can't wait to get mine out, the ammo shipped thursday last week so I'm expecting it tomorrow. will probably be the weekend before I actually get to fire it though.

Just got my very first SKS on the EE after collecting several VZ-58/CZ-858 over the last four years - (none of those the latest generation from CSA - not yet, anyway). I love my Czech wonder rifles, and I was not sure what to expect from the SKS.

The SKS I got was a really nice laminate stock version, chrome barrel, numbers that don't appear to be force-matched, Tula arsenal markings, not beaten up in any way.

Took it to the range for the first time today and had a blast with it. It's a completely different experience that the VZ/CZ, but like Stusks says, it sure is fun to fire. Even with iron sights and my tired middle-aged bifocal eyes, it gave me palm sized groups of 5 rounds with very little practice (wish our range had a gong....).

If I had one mark on the minus side of the ledger, it's that the trigger is heavy. It isn't gritty or creepy, just a hard pull. However, that can be worked on - thanks to all who have contributed to the excellent SKS FAQ's.

Not very often that you find that much fun for under two hundred bucks. Knowing I was going to be buying one, I ordered a case deflector from Marstar ahead of time - twelve bucks well spent.

The SKS will make a darn good antidote for troublesome coyotes, just like the 858, and a great truck gun to boot. Another bonus is that it uses the same ammo as the 858.

Now, all it needs is a small 4 power scope, or maybe a red dot or holosight.

I guess I'm an SKS fan now too.

ask for SKS hunting, with some decent soft points, it will do anything a 30-30 will. and if you reload the skys the limit!

I just pulled steel bullets off some cz surplus and replaced them with soft point sierras! The brass is pretty sparse at my wss and anytime i fire it i loose like 1/3 casings in the grass. Arrrggggghhhhhh! One of the stickies here shows how to cut down and crip for 5 round strippers too.

got mine out for the first time this morning... man alive that's a fun shoot. After the first 10 shots or so getting it sighted in, I was at least hitting the 4" circle most times. I can't say I'd put a scope on it, but I may tune up the iron sights to get a better sight pictue

Was there an improvement in accuracy with the reloaded bullets?..

Good idea on the reloading surplus with soft point. I had my shipment of sp arrive this afternoon from SFRC (thanks Ryan). I am looking forward to going back to the range and getting this puppy ready for hunting season. I'm curious to see what the ballistic difference between FMJ and SP are.

I'm sure you meant to say " it won't do anything a 30-30 will", most folks try to include the small cartridge with the 30-30, which would make it an adequate big game rifle. This does not hold up as the 123gr. bullet going the same speed as the 170 grain 30/30 puts out 600ft. lbs. less energy then the senior round. Penetration is also much better with the longer/heavier bullet of the Winchester round.

Do you think a deer will notice?

The tests done on "Brass Fetcher Online" indicate a 154 grain 7.62x39 penetrated 16.3" of ballistic gelatin, while a .30/30 loaded with Hornady Evolution 160 grain did 17.5". Not a huge difference, and consider the 154 grain wasn't exactly a premium North American hunting bullet. The advantage goes to the .30/30, but not by much.

I have heard it said that if it will kill a human it will kill a deer. Would a 7.62x39mm kill a human? Anyone got data on that?

in all honesty, I'm having trouble sorting the sarcasm from the theory. I own an SKS and wish to hunt (next year now, but maybe spring turkey season). Is this a good idea?

so as long as I'm not treating it as a sniper rifle, I should be ok then?

I suppose this question belongs in the hunting forum, but what type of ammo was used for those kills?

Well, i dont know where theres a stat and im too lazy to look right now, but id say that 7.62X39 (same round as the AK) has killed quite the handful.
