Finaly managed to get to the range to try out my Russian SKS.
Took along my Norinco paratrooper for comparison.

Some on here mentioned that the Russian was a nicer gun to shoot.
You known what, they were right. Much more confortable trigger pull.

Also learned mine is pinned to 4 rather then 5 rounds. I got it from Frontier so it pinned on the mag follower rather then the bottom.

I'm debating wether its worth to have the pin shorten. I dont have the power tools and a file wont fit.

Also took out the M305 (2007) for the 1st time. Was a little aprehensive about shotting a 308. Frankly didnt see the difference in recoil versu the SKS.

Might sound funny to some of you guys but I'm short statured and the 1st center fire I ever shoot was a 30-30. That didnt go too well. Badly brussed my shoulder. Now that I'm a bit wise, I realise I wasnt holding it rigth (too loosely). Also when I learned why you need ear protection hehe...

The above was the reason I got my 1st SKS. Shooting a 22 got boring and
7.62x39 was said to be milded recoiled.

Today also remember why I stop going to a range. Sucks to be a beginner.
The regulars either try to help you (which I appriciate) or give you a f@#$ing attitude.

On my way over, drove slowly, but apparently not enought as one of the staff started to sware at me. A that point I stoped the car and backed up
to asked him if he said something! Given my size he must have been started that I'd actualy back up and confront him. He took it down a notch and told me to get keep going.

Was trying to bore sight my 22mag. The guy next to me was giving me some advice, then one of the 2 official walks by and give me : Is it the fault of the gun or the shooter! With a smug attitude.

I replied both. Its the 1st time I mout a scope on a rifle and I'm a poor shot.
The reply: oh realy if the shots arent hitting the target where are they going!

Answer. In the back stop below the target. After this exchange he gave someone else his attention. The other official was much friendlier.

Bugs me cause I obeyed all the rules. Had muzzle awarenes at all time.
Sweeped no one, but cant say I got the same a few times.

Its like you have to be an expert to be at the range! How Am I supose to learn? Really whish they had Appleseed shoots up here. Even looked at the formalities to drive down to one.

Maybe next time I'll fit more in by wearing Camo, talking up a good game, sware a bit and bringing something other then buget rifles ( I cant afford 500-600+$ guns that why I shoot surplus and used). The irony is, this is the nice range I went to as the other one my area is said to be worst !

Wasnt all bad, learned a few things. 50yard is not a good distance to sight a scope. I'm confortable with a 308. (at 50yards, enought for deer??). Turn out the be the one I was most accurate with. Some of the staff were pleasant. My Russian only takes 4 rounds. Feel confident enought to give the 30-30 an other try.

Good to see you aren't going to give up. Sounds like your range officers need a bit of an attitude adjustment. What range were you at? Perhaps one of the CGN membership could meet you out there next time and give you some pointers. You will have a lot more fun once you learn the basics of marksmanship.

Keep plugging away at it and don't let the range Nazi's get to you.

Just take your time!

Yeah sometimes it sucks to be the newbie.

Try to enjoy yourself at the range, don't mind the grumpy ones, they'll bother somebody else eventually.

Concerning the scope setting, i'd sight mine at 100M usually; not too close nor too far.

What was the range you were shooting at ?

Don't give up on the shooting due to twits on the range. Just a little note that you have probably already learned is that when you hold the more powerful guns and fire you must have it tight to you but also allow your shoulder to move back with the recoil of the gun. If your shoulders are solid as a rock you will end up with bruises.

Good on you with confronting the snappy range officer. I don't take crap from anyone (as long as it is not deserved).
I had a similar incident happen to me at the PoCo range and I took the guy asside and had a "chat" with him. Never had an issue since.
It's much like "new" cops. They tend to flex there power as often as they can to assert themselves as the authority figure. If the problem persists confront them, let them know that you will not be returning the the range. Write a letter to the range president and inform them of there RO's attitude and how you will not be recommending people go there.
The firearms community in Canada tends to keep to themselves for the most part so word-of-mouth goes a VERY long way when dealing with matters like this.

Glad to see you are enjoying your rifles. It shouldn't matter what you are shooting as long as you are having fun doing it.

The scope is on a 22mag. 100meter/yeard seems a bit for a rimfire.
Should have opted for the 25yard which I undersatd is also good for
250yard (not that I'd try) but since 50 is mostly what I was gonna use it for decided just set it for that.

I went to the Saint-Jacque le mineur range. If I had a restricted PAL the Vankleek hill gun club would be more convinient but they seem to be quiet about membership rates.

+1 for not giving up.
+1 for recognizing your trip to the range as a learning experience.

Every time I hear this story I'm glad for the abandoned gravel pits and logging stages where I learned to shoot, and for the folks who took their time and made sure I enjoyed the experience.

Pat, welcome to the world of stubborn old white guys with money (and opinions). If you're like me and you have no tolerance for that kind of stuff, go first thing in the morning.

Oh alright, since you were talking about deer hunting range I though your scope was on one of your larger caliber rifle.

Wierd about Saint-Jacques, I've heard good things about it. Don't loose heart!

I've only once met a range nazi at that range. Most the guys there are pretty good, and its usually a relaxed atmosphere from what I have noticed, this being my first year there.

The one thing I have noticed there is that the guys running it all have a different interpretation of the rules. Makes it a pain some times, but over all everyone there is friendly.

Don't give up, and the next time they give you a hard time, explain to him that if new guys stop coming to the range, the sport will eventually die, and that he should be helping you or leaving you alone so someone else can help you.

hi pat25.
if you are around saint therese (640 east) goto "ruisseau noir".the best place i've been to so far!it's outdoors only but will have indoor cabin with a window to shoot outdoors soon.since you're a new guy shoot @ the range "up top"
and when you get more experience you can progress to the lower range.

Yea morning are more crowed, I figured I'd have an easier time in the afternoon. When I got theres was only one other guy and no officials.
We just got along about time outs.

I work in the service industry, I get plenty of opinions hehe....

As I dont go often, I tend to bring a few rifles. Given Ammo price, I cant afford to shoot commercial 308 all day. I take along a rim fire to fill up the rest of the day.

Yes I had heard good things too, thats why I went there instead of the other more well knowned range in that area.

Maybe I just caught some of them on a bad day. Weather was cold and crappy, the morning I was told was quite busy. Probably got sweeped with loaded guns a few times! I'll give them a few more try.

I did think of the above argument but decided to just let things blow over.
Something I cant do in my professional life.

Mostly what I'm wondering right now is wether its really worth trying to fix the mag capacity on my SKS. I have the 5 round stripper clip move down. At 4 it gets annoying. The gun is really alot nicer to shoot then the Norc.
