From reading posts here I now understand how the cap of the tool kit can be fastened over the muzzle to protect it while cleaning, and the body of the capsule also serves as a handle for the cleaning rod, but today I read elsewhere that the capsule lid can also serve as a blank firing device, if properly locked onto the front sight base. What exactly does that mean?

For use with blank firing ammunition...perhaps.

But I doubt the cap would stay on long, or that there is any real need for the cap being used like this.

what tool kit? i only got a cleaning kit in the buttstock, is that what you are talking about? if so , the lid do not fit over the muzzle properly so i wont try that as a blank firing device.

They are different models of cleaning kits, Some have a knurled "Ring" around the cap, Some have a hole to use as a guide for a cleaning rod.

Yep..the one in the stock, the one I had with my SKS and then sent back to SIR fit over my muzzle just fine. That little tool kit is actually pretty ingenius when you take a look at it. As for the blank firing device, the other day was the first time I had ever read about that.

I agree the cleaning/tool kit is quite an ingenious little device. :)

But a muzzle cap for blank firing...I don't think so as it is not nearly attached strong enough for that.

I'd have to see this written in an officially translated Russian SKS manual before I would believe it was used like this.

Besides the tools would probably rattle about inside the buttstock without the cap, and be a pain to get out.

And there is proper muzzle caps for these rifles.

Here is the one for the Yugo...
