I would like to buy a screwdriver set and a punch set(s) and would appreciate any guidance or suggestions on what and where to buy. I want to refinish a few shotgun stocks/forearms and would be using the tools for disassembly and assembly. Thanks in advance.
 
I would suggest that you buy a gunsmiths screwdriver set to whatever your planed use and budget allow...same with your punches.
Cheap $20 sets can be had at outfitting stores and gun shops while more expensive sets can be had from Brunnels and Midway, as for punches they need not be a gunsmith specific tool, any CanTire, Princess auto , car parts store etc. will have pin punches, brass punches and small ball peen hammers/ plastic hammers.

I personally use a $20 Winchest screwdriver set to supliment my extensive machinists and mechanics tools.
 
A Chapman screwdriver set, as many old screwdrivers as you can buy or scrounge up, and a bench grinder to adapt them to your use when the size you need is not already in hand.

Just keep in mind that there is actually a bit of skill required to apply force with control, when dealing with obstinate screws, to think lots, then move your hands! :)

A Chapman screwdriver set(about $70Cdn) is expensive and the 'bits' are pricey and not exactly easy to replace when they break as they're designed to do. Anything that says "Gunsmith's" on it will cost more.
A bench grinder and a set of screwdrivers from Crappy Tire or Princess Auto is your friend though. For butt stock removal you're going to need at least one 12" screw driver, a good locking plier(vice grips) and a solid, 4", bench vise. And a very solid bench to put it on.
 
I bought a set of wheeler screw drivers from wholesale sports for about $100 a few months ago. It is like 98 pcs or so. The quality is alright, your typical made in china stuff. Has a good case and suits my needs as a home hobbyist. As far as punches just a small set from Canadian tire or the like will get you by. A bench mounted vice is pretty handy too.
 
Thanks for the suggestions. I think I will pick up a set of wheeler screwdrivers and and few punch sets. I have a vice and other hand tools. A decent grinder will have to be on the list.
 
I picked up a nice set of hollow ground bits for about $10.00 at Princess Auto a couple years ago, its nowhere near a 100 pcs, but fits almost everything Ive come across so far.
