I am building a custom bolt action hunting rifle for my father whilst im in gunsmithing school as a gift to him for all he has taught me growning up. Its the first rifle Ive ever built and it is coming along well. Learned alot and once I return home I intend to start work on a flintlock of some*Sort.*

I wanted this to be a very custom high grade set up. Express sights and mounts from germany, leather covered felt lined rifle case from jeffs outfitters, the works!*

The other day while I was in class however I decided that since I have a rifle case for it the gun needed some accesories and tools.*

So I wandered around the shop for a while trying to figure out what to make. The following stuff is what I have come up with. What do you guys think ?

The turnscrews were 1/2 tool steel heated up and twisted into a spiral using a tap wrench.*Then they were filed and ground into screwdriver points to exactly fit the sight base screws and action screws.*

The turnscrews were then turned on the lathe and threaded. The handles were drilled and tapped aswell. The inserts on all the pieces of antler are held in with acraglass as well as threads, they will never come out and are very strong.*

The handle for the cleaning rod was made from a cheap cleaning kit, I cut the brass handle section out of the plastic one and fitted it into a horn one.

Then is the engraving I did on all the tools. It was done by hand with a pencil to layout and then an ultra fine dremel bit. After it was stained with ink. The RW is my fathers initials.*

Thanks alot, there is a thread in blackpowder with some other things ive been working on, it was one of my first projects trying to build something. Turned out pretty well.

Here is a picture of the rifle in the case I bought, the stock still needs to be finished and it needs to be blued.

Your a very respectful and thoughtful son for doing this for your Dad. It seems to be a rare quality in this day and age. Your father will be very pleased with your gift and extremely proud of his son.

It appears you have the makings of a fine gunsmith.

The very best to you in your new endeavours. Canada could use a few more like you in all respects.

Looks very good . . . you are both very lucky.
However, with "Express sights and mounts from germany", does that Model 700 have to speak German?
How many more hours of work?
Where are you taking the course?
What calibre and the rest of the specs?

These are the mounts:

I cant reccomend jeffs outfitters enough, reasonable prices and absolutely great service. They have an awesome selection of things, that case I have cost 224.99 plus tax.

Cheers, McLean

Thanks very much for your kind words, I am doing this for him to thank him for all he has taught me. I couldnt ask for a better father. Ill be starting a gunsmithing business in nanaimo when I return home from school. I has already designed my trade label in the style of the old manton and army and navy style labels.

No but with all the loud barking its going to do it will certainly sound like german :p

hours of work I have lost track on, probably several hundred and I have two more months to go here so probably atleast another 50-60 hours.

Im taking the course in maniwaki QC and its all in french. I speak no french and how ive made it through all year with solid a`s is beyond me.

specs:
Rifle: stock remington 700 with ####ty black beadblast finish that is a nightmare trying to sand out.
caliber: 7mm remington magnum
Stock: semi inlet from wenig gunstocks
Barrel: kreiger pre contured barrel blank
sights: recknagel front ramp with hooded fibre optic site
Scope: leopould 3x9x40mm
mounts: european swing mounts
Case: jeffs outfitters full lenght canvas and leather rifle case
: sling an cartridge pouch from laroche leathers in alymer QC

Thanks again, this project means alot to me. Im glad you guys like them.

In class today im refinishing the stock on my 10 gauge, inbetween coats I made some snap caps for the case. I just loaded a round (no powder :D) then drilled a hole on the milling machine. Ill be Acra-glassing Some leather into the primer pockets to finish them off.

Update on the gun, Almost done, couple more coats of oil and mount the sights.

Here is the bluing process. Polished the metal up to 600 which took forever. Then polished it on the wheel. After that 15 mins in the soap, then 5 in cold water with a scrub, then 15-20 in the bluing solution, then back in the cold water to check the finish, if its good it goes in boiling water for 20 mins and if not it goes back into the solution
