top .45?

Top .45ACP?

As we've seen in this thread it is a very personalized issue.

I have a couple.... personally, I like USGI 1911A1 models the best....

But like I said, it's a personal issue. ;)

for me, its pretty much down to the dan wesson, bobtail commander perhaps, or the sig 220 sao. also heard the xds are pretty good, as well as m&p, though didn't the smith have reliability issues?

i went with the dan wesson pointman seven myself, it should be in this week!

I don't think you'll have any regrets whatsoever!!! I'm very pleased with mine. Extremely good value for the money spent in terms of accuracy and build quality!!! :)

Not sure what you want to use the gun for. The CZ 97 is a great pistol but doesn't qualify for IDPA but a great pistol never the less. STI Trojan is a nice gun. You could spend another $500 on your Norinco and have the equal of any good custom gun. Joe Dlask does great work on the 1911.

Take Care

I've had a couple of Springfields over the years, a Colt, and currently have a Kimber Custom Target II. I had Gunnar do the trigger on it, and fit a BarSto barrel that I had lying around. Definitely the nicest .45 I've owned, and scarily accurate with just about any load I've put through it.

leaning towards either a colt commander or dan wesson. i believe the dw will be more accurate, but the colt seems plenty fine in that dept from what ive read. dw seems to shoot like a match gun from some of the reviews ive seen. at this point, i will take what i can get. seems they're hard to come by in kanada.

Best .45 1911 for the money? I would say a Dan Wesson. A few months ago my two friends and I bought 2 DW bobtails and one pointman7. These guns are outstanding in every way - looks (all stainless steel), functionality, accuracy, build quality, materials quality (no MIM parts). Each of these guns cost $1100 and change Cdn funds and are made in New York State by CZ-USA (this is not the Dan Wesson of yesteryear).

You can call the factory direct and talk to the guys actually making and servicing these guns. I spent half an hour asking questions before I even bought. They treated me like a king.

I bought a bobtail. It is stuffed with genuine Ed Brown parts borrowed from the Ed Brown bobtail stainless .45s, namely the Executive Carry (about $2700 US) and the Cobra carry (about $2500 US). Check out the CZ-USA and Ed Brown websites for yourself (prices have been changing since Obama).

My bobtail has no Metal Injection Molded parts, and has the following Ed Brown parts in it right from the factory: Ed Brown bobtail stainless mainspring housing, Ed Brown "Memory Groove" stainless grip safety, Ed Brown stainless thumb safety, and Ed Brown stainless slide stop.

The front strap of this pistol comes standard with checkering machined into the frame. Match grade barrel and bushing as well. This gun is tight and accurate in every way. Built with precision and they all shoot fantastically well.

BONUS: this gun (bobtail only) also comes with bona fide Trijicon three dot night sights with offset colours on the front and rear dots. This feature alone is worth upwards of about $200 installed. I never appreciated the radical advantage that quality night sights provide until I bought this gun.

As far as I'm concerned, these DW guns are several hundred dollars UNDERpriced. There is no downside here. In truth, regarding the bobtail, you're basically getting an Ed Brown Executive Carry bobtail for less than half price, with key parts being actual Ed Brown parts and the rest made and finished to top "production class" standards at minimum, and arguably at entry level "custom class" standards otherwise. Compare the DW bobtail with the Ed Brown Executive Carry bobtail for yourself on their sites.

We had no problem getting these fine DW pistols, and fast, from CGN Sponsor ARMSEAST. Walter there took 5 star care of us. I'm happy to refer you.

Of all my collection, my DW bobtail has become my favourite. Like with night sights, and the bobtail grip, I had my doubts about the commander length format of this gun, but as it turns out I totally fell in love with all three. I cannot say enough about this gun!

I encourage you to do your homework and actually try to at least handle, if not shoot, your prospective purchases. Don't rush it - buy right the first time and you'll be a happy shooter!

Good luck and keep us posted.

If money was not an issue for me, and it is, I would have an Ed Brown or Les Baer. I think the Les Baer would be the better value for the money for a high end 1911.

Look for Colt series 70's and 1970's colt combat commanders. They build into real great guns that last for ever. In the modern era.....Para-ordnance P14-45 in blue and stainless steel make great guns to build on. The colt combat commander....is the steel model...makes a great gun to build on and is a great shooter,,,,,

I have had a 1917 1911, a nickel Series 70, two Gold Cups, a Springfield, a Para P14-45, and most recently, a STI Spartan.

The STI is the best pistol at any price, let alone for the ridiculously low price it sells for. Super accurate, great sights and trigger.

thor74, i just pulled the trigger on the pointman seven but seriously considered the commander. how does your buddy like his pointman? i wanted adjustable sights and full length barrel but the bobtail has everything else with the night sights, fronstrap checkering and the acclaimed baer grip. i hope i dont regret forgoing the bobtail for the pointman...
