I can't name my top three, but I'd take an M&P .45 three times... 
With all due respect to the 1911, I'd prefer the M&P over it every time. Great ergonomics, 10-round mag, no manual safety lever and a better Safe-Action trigger than the Glock [IMHO], esp. after you put in an Apex service kit. My only caveat is that it may be a touch large for small hands.

Early G21s had parts breakage issues but later models improved. The 20/21SF frame is pretty good.
The USPs that I have shot have had triggers that I did not like but they are extremely robust pistols.
The 3rd gen S&W autos (i.e. 4506 etc) are also good guns but heavy and I don't know how easy it would be to get parts now.
I can't think of another non-1911 .45 that I would recommend. I don't know much about the FN pistols.

LOL. Accept no substitute.
Just make sure you have giant hands - please note size difference with the Glock 17 and M&P.... But yes its an incredibly accurate combat pistol out of the box.

Best bang for your buck....Taurus PT 24/7 pro....Hands down!!
As long as you don't mind owning a gun where a hundred thousand of them had to be recalled because shaking them too hard made them go off without the trigger being pressed, the Taurus is a pretty good pistol. Just carry it very carefully, and use a holster lined with a few inches of soft foam. Other than that, no downsides.
Well, the warranty issues, I guess. But other than the warranty and the fact that it might shoot you for no reason, great gun.
