Torn between Two Rifles, Remington 700 5r and Tikka T3X Ctr

Tikka all the way, Just get a standard T3x and get a B&C stock, Mountain Tactical bottom metal for AICS mags instead. CTR mags are stupid expensive for no good reason.

I've seen this bottom metal, I will probable order it. It's the same price as one Mag.

There's a bunch of other little stuff that I was going to order too, but that has to be put on hold. My visa was compromised and these ####ers tried to buy almost $10k worth of stuff on the Canadian tire website. Luckily Canadian tire caught it and didn't process the transactions. I still had to get td to cancel my card. So now I can't order anything until I get my new one in the mail. What a piss off.

They are super nice. I did have to openen up a bit to fit the KRG trigger tho :) I got the standard version as I already had 5 Tikka mags .

you might want to shoot the rifle first before spending the equivalent of an extra CTR mag on AICS bottom metal/mags for it. CTR mags feed as smooth as wet ice, and the double stack magazine is way more compact than the 10rd AICS mags.

if you're a reloader who wants to run high BC bullets, before you spend money swapping to AICS make sure you measure the max COAL that your CTR mag allows and compare it with the AICS mags that are out there. my 223 Tikka varmint is throated pretty long, way longer than the POS factory Tikka mag allowed. and the only readily available AICS option that allowed 80gr+ to be loaded to the lands was to go with Accurate Mags, which require a pile of modification work to do it (dremel + JB weld).
I can't find any info on what cartridge length the 223 CTR mags allow, but the 308 CTR mags allow for nearly 3" COAL - longer than most AICS mags. the 223 CTR mags could be similar, which would make them well worth keeping if you reload.
my $0.02.

Tikka has a few advantages in my opinion:

1/8 gives you much greater flexibility in bullet choice
Much smoother bolt operation
Bolt lift does not interfere with scope and knuckles
Arguably a stronger action design with less need for bedding
Excellent reputation for accuracy
Excellent out of the box trigger
Very good aftermarket support (obviously not as good as the 700 but close enough that it almost doesn’t matter anymore)

PS ... I’ve owned several Tikkas including 3 presently in different calibers. I have yet to be disappointed by one. I have also owned one Remington 700 and have used others. They are nice rifles but Tikkas are nicer.

Definitely not a stronger action then the 700...
The 5R stock is much better then OEM Tikka as well.

As far as I’m aware, tikka’s are made with a cast metal receiver. Not a piece of billet or barstock and machined like custom actions or rem 700 actions.

5R stock is better, yes.

Stronger action? I’m no expert but isn’t the R700 essentially a tube? The Tikka action is more block shaped.

Oh, you mean which action is stiffer....
Hitzy probably took "stronger" to mean which is more resistant to containing a case failure.

I am looking to build a new target rifle in .223

Most of my shooting is done from 50-300yrds.

Both rifles are basically the same money, and have 20" threaded barrel, the 700 is 1:9 vs the 1:8 twist on the tikka.

I would love a T3X varmint, however I can't seem to find anyone that carries one with the 20" barrel.

Any advise or recommendations between the two?

I would not buy a Tikka in .223 because it is design for a medium action cartridge. It is an awesome rifle in 6.5x55, with lots of room in the mag for long OAL.

In .223 they get the action shorter by blocking the travel, and the mag have a shim in it !!!!! But that's how you get a Sako quality hammer forged barrel at a decent price.....

I don't like Remington so I cant help you with that one.

I can suggest a CZ-527 as I own one, You have the accuracy out of the box with a great hammered forged barrel that last forever like the tikka. you also have a thru micro-mauser action. Not a tricked out medium action!

Also I woulnd't call the Tikka an thru "out of the box" accurate gun, IMO you also need to change the aluminum recoil lug, get a pillar bedding and a decent butt pad.

My Cz-527 came with an aluminum block bedding from factory !!!!
