CALGARY -- Alberta is extending its suspension of the controversial spring grizzly bear hunt into 2009 amid growing evidence that grizzly numbers are significantly lower than earlier estimates.

But Sustainable Resource Development Minister Ted Morton won't order a status review of the grizzly -- which could see the bear listed as a threatened or endangered species -- until a five-year official count is completed next year.

"We'll keep the moratorium in place until we get the numbers in," Morton said in an interview.

An average of 14 Alberta grizzlies were "harvested" yearly until the province halted the hunt for an initial three-year period in 2006 in order to get a handle on how many of the bears still prowled its forests.

'SYMPATHETIC' TO THEIR PLIGHT

Until the entire count is completed, Morton said he would not change the way Alberta classifies and treats its bears, despite being "sympathetic" to their plight.

Before the survey, it was generally believed Alberta had 700 to 1,000 grizzlies. "Obviously, it seems pretty clear that they'll be lower than some of the guesstimates that had been made earlier," Morton conceded.

Gord Stenhouse, chairman of Alberta's grizzly bear recovery team and head of the census, speculated that only about 500 grizzlies remain in the province "and maybe less."

Such dwindling numbers would qualify the Alberta grizzly to be reclassified from its current title as a species "that may be at risk" to "threatened" and perhaps even "endangered" according to international standards.

I'm curious to see what the actual population turns out to be. I've personally seen more grizzlies than ever in the last couple of years west of Calgary in Kananaskis and also SW of Pincher Creek in the Castle River area. The 500 number seems like BS to me, but I'm no biologist. Hopefully the bear numbers are high enough to bring back the hunt again someday soon. I'm worried though that once they stop the season, it's almost impossible to bring back, no matter what the facts are. You guys in Ontario would know that regarding your spring bear season.

I'm worried that we have as many or more bears then ever now, however this new study being more accurate will show less numbers then previous "estimates" and be justification for shutting down hunting permanently.

From what I've seen roads and traffic are way more detrimental to grizz then hunters, but I bet we don't stop roads from going in, just hunters. If our population is at a number thats what our current ecosystems offer for holding capacity why not allow a limited season. They are not endangered on the whole, BC is full of them, we have marginal habitat compared to BC for them so we have less big surprise.

I doubt any of that will be taken into account with the decisions made anyway.

you know, I don't see it as a big deal personally. It can't be that bad to let the population get another year to grow, and leave the hunt open for another year or two, until they ban it for good.

My Guess its that its got nothing to do with the how many Grizzlies are still out there. Its political just like the spring Bear Hunt in Ontario.

Looks like the BS is moving West in a hurry........
